"Big in Japan" - Snowboarding Forum

Hello,
I'm not a snowboarder, but I watched an ineresting movie about it and in the movie they introduced Travis Rice as "big in Japan". What does that mean? Is it some kind of insider joke I don't get?

Since everyone was so mean to you, I'll explain it. Essentially, the air is thinner in Japan because it's on the other side of the world. Since the air is thinner, there is less compression force on T. Rice when he's down there, so he puffs out like a puffer fish. Hence everyone says he's "big in Japan".

i thought it was cuz all japanese people are so small and travis probably stands out a little in a crowd of midgets haha
