Even though it's the most accessible extreme sport, it's still an extreme sport and can have fatal consequences. But shit, over 100 people die per day in the US from car crashes...
You're traveling at a decent to high rate of speed with objects that won't move if you hit them on the slopes. Make a mistake and it'll knock the life out of you for sure. Colorado averages something like 12-14 collision deaths a year. Compare that to the 11 million skier visits we have in the state per year, and that really isn't that many. All other states have a much lower skier visit number and I am pretty sure the number of fatalities per year are much lower too. Regardless, it is always sad when this happens and I am sure it is little comfort to his family and friends.
