Two snowboarders shot in road rage incident near Mount Hood

By Associated Press

ZIG ZAG, Ore. - Two men were seriously injured Monday evening when they were shot during what police call a "random encounter" as they drove home from a day of snowboarding.

According to Oregon State Police, the two were driving home from Government Camp Monday night when another car began tailgating their van.

The two men pulled over near Lolo Pass Road to let that car pass, but the other car stopped as well.

The pair got out of their van and confronted the tailgater, whom state police say then pulled out a gun and shot them both.

The pair ran back to the van and drove away before stopping on the shoulder and calling 911. The gunman drove away, possibly heading west, state police said.

The shooter is described as a white man in his 30s who was wearing a baseball cap. Police had no description of the suspect's vehicle.

Both men were taken to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital with serious wounds, one via helicopter.

Two 9-year-old boys were traveling with the victims in the van; both were uninjured.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Oregon State Police Northern Command Center dispatch at (800) 452-7888.

Yeah, while I feel bad, there is a part of me that is asking, "so what really happened?" We only get this side of the story and I have to wonder what was going on betweent the two vehicles befor they both pulled over and why did these guys get out and confront this guy when they had 2 kids in the car. I have to wonder how much male bravado was going on that caused such poor judgement.

In my situation this summer, I was totally stupid for stopping, but it was just me in the vehicle that I endangered; I did not have a kid with me. After my deal which I walked away from with nothing more than a concussion and stitches, I will never pull over under any circumstance even if it means causing a serious traffic accident. I think there is more to this than meets the eye.

Anytime you pull of the road because of a traffic altercation, things are not going to end well. It's not like you were pulling over to have a sit down discussion about it. Pretty much the best thing to do, is back off and let it slide. Otherwise, escalation becomes the name of the game...

my views on this type of thing have changed a little.... since moving to texas and knowing that anyone can carry a weapon in their car, I am way less animated toward bad drivers. makes you think twice.

although one could argue that a better person would be thinking twice anyway.

with regards to pulling over due to a perceieved incident.... just consider the situation in south africa for a dose of worst case scenario.

granted, it is somewhat removed from north american road rage episodes, but the comparison i think is sound;

south africa is the carjacking capital of the world. a bloke will lie in the road. a car stops. 3 fellas with guns leap out of the bushes.

the point is, cars can and often are, refuges of home. in such glass bubbles of soft seats, air con and favourite choons, you are afforded the security of a familiar surrounding.

meanwhile outside, any number of shitty scenarios might be unfolding, thru gawd knows what neighbourhoods, with almost a limitless escalation of risk.

you get out of your bubble and into a world of fek knows what!?!
