Need advice on a new car.

So at the moment I drive a 1991 Dodge Carvan and as we have decided to stay in Canada for the long term so I am looking for a decent car.

I'm from Australia so I don't really know the history of the cars here. (which ones are good and which ones are to be avoided)

I'm looking for a small SUV. Something like a Ford Escape. I'm going used as I dont have the cash to splash on a new one.

I am looking at either a Jeep Liberty or a Ford Escape. Any good? I'm looking at a 2003/04 somewhere in that range and these look like good value. I need something that will be good on snow and icy roads. Have room for gear in the back and able to take one of those roof box things.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

I personally don't like Jeeps. Many of my friends have had one and they seem to like to break down a lot (maybe not totally, but small things like, oh, power steering...). Also, one chick got in a little bumper tap and the entire damn thing fell off. Other car was fine though

in that car segment, you might want to look for something japanese for better value. have you looked at the subaru outback or forester, honda cr-v, or even on the korean end, the hyundai tuscon?

american cars do have better quality now (ford is matched with toyota). the escape is a solid choice- my sister drives one, i'm looking into them and my mom is looking into one too. i do agree with snowfox on jeeps because they did become very crappy lately because of daimler.

I have heard the part and servicing for imported cars can be very expensive here? I drive a ford at home and have never had any major problems so I am leaning that way.

He's looking for a used car so I don't think it's a good idea to go with any of those listed cars. My friend drove the Ford Escape and she hated it. She changed to a Honda Civic lol.

You should look into a Suburu wagon, Outback, or something if you want a small SUV. Hell, I would just get a used Suburu WRX.

Spaz is right. The new cars that Ford, GM, and Chrysler are churning out are better quality than those from just a few years ago.

I have so many friends that drive Jeep Cherokees and they are constantly working on them. Great engines, but everything else keeps breaking down. Hyundai mini SUVs are nice too as Spaz said. Plus, you will still have a warranty for it if you buy one that is less than 10 years old.

Get ya a Chevy. We have 3 chevy trailblazers in our family and nobody has any problems with them. Make it a z71 and you can handle any weather.

Stay away from Mitsubishi cars. I drive a Mitsu Galant and love it, but I honestly wouldn't recommend their cars to anyone. Unless it is the 3000gt or Lancer EVO. Their engines rock, but the rest of the car and their warranty service suck ass.
