Fitting binding with board question

If I buy a binding and board on the internet, how do I determine if they will fit each other? I assume the bindings fit is determine by the hole pattern and hole spacing on the board. If I buy a size 9 shoes and the bindings says fit size 7-9, will it fit all/most size 9 shoe manufacturers?

If you are buying a size 7-9 binding it is probably a medium which should fit just about any board. Those bindings will fit 99.9% of size 9 boots.

So the reason bindings don't fit boards is because the bindings are too large and extend beyond the board's width?

In some extreme cases. Generally most bindings will fit on any board unless its a very narrow board with very big bindings and you have almost no angle on them.
