Default Need help with Camera Recommendation

I am looking to get a camera for snowboarding. The main purpose is to take videos of my friends and i to analyze our technique and improve on our skills. I am NOT looking for one of those cameras that you mount on the helmet because i don't want first person views. What i am looking for in the camera is that it is small and portable, waterproof/coldproof, zoomable for videos, and my bf wants it to be HD. since this camera will strictly be used for snowboarding, I don't want to spend too much money on it. I already have an SLR and regular point and shoot digital camera. Any one have any suggestions/recommendations? thanks in advance

Are you looking for a camera that shoots video or a camcorder? If it is the Camcorder (video camera) then you will want to stay away from cameras with a Hard drive or DVD, especially for higher altitude. The less moving parts the longer the camera will last in our environment. Mini DV or Flash is the way to go.

You will also want at least 30x zoom, some low light abiltiy, and may want to consider a fisheye or wideviewer lens attachment.

Would a helmet-cam with a wide angle like the go pro hd really be that bad?

I was thinking about getting one to film with, not so much for POV but more of to film my friends and then crop out the helmet part.

I was sorta inspired by this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wQca...eature=related
If the guy would have been closer to his friends and really focused on filming them I think it could turn out alright

I don't know, I just like the idea of 1080p HD, $300, waterproof, can stick it on my skateboard/toy submarine/whatever, and when it comes to filming snowboarding, I just have to sit by the rail or the jump and just watch...no worrying about dropping the cam or getting water in it or having to wear a backpack

That was my plan anyway, we'll see how it turns out

My brother got a Sanyo Xacti VPC WH1 Digital Camera | Waterproof HD Camera | VPC-WH1 | Xacti SANYO

It is a waterproof camcorder, records to sdhc, and does 720p. He got yellow just in case it's dropped in the snow. I think it was around $350.

Seconded... I looked into video cameras, this was the best option I found... As it turns out, couldn't afford it, but the intention was there =D

Thanks for all the great recommendations. i will surely check out all of them.

The reason why i don't want a camera mounted to my helmet is because i want to sit at the foot of the slope and film my friends coming down so that they can analyze the footage afterwards to improve their technique. we are not experts at the sport yet, i would say we're somewhere between beginner and intermediate. i would hate to fall and have the camera snap off the helmet.

a camcorder would be great, however they're usually bulkier, so i was thinking a camera would be more portable and my wallet wouldn't hurt as much if i were to break it.

i can second the hf20 or any other HD canon camcorder like that.
i have the canon HFs100 and it is amazing but probably a little out of your price range at $1000. canon make cheaper models of my camera like the HV 20 and HV 30 that still shoot very high quality video
