Default Rentals...

So, first of all I am a beginner so I may make some stupid comments or points, please don't be too hard on me

I've been up 5 times this year, before that I haven't been in 8 or so years (don't actually remember the last time), and I hadn't been many times then or been very good. I'm not doing too bad now.

Anyways, the first time I went up there this year I rented gear, after that I decided to buy my own (thanks for the tips here). When I rented, I got what looked to be a pretty new Rossignol board, it wasn't marked up at all. It was setup with a centered stance, and I think it may have been a twin board. I'm around 5'10 and 155lbs, and got a 155 board which I thought fit and worked well for me. So, all in all it was a good rental experience.

We went back up last time to the same mountain, and my cousin rented gear, he's never been boarding before. He's around the same weight as me, but a bit taller. We determined he most likely would ride his board regular. When he comes back from where they give him the boards we had to ask him if they even talked to him... They gave him a 150 directional board, bindings set way back, setup goofy. It also looks like one of the most beat up piece of crap boards they had. He said he told them he's never been before but needed a regular board. So we go back and I give them board and told them to give him a better one. I said he needed a bigger board, and a regular board. To which she tells me that one is a regular board and their boards are setup to be centered (which it very clearly was not). The only way the board could have possibly been considered regular is if the bindings were set way forward, which people don't do right? (I warned I may ask stupid questions). I basically told her to give us the same board I had when I rented, we got a 155 Rossignol accelerator, with a centered stance. I guess it still may have been a little short, but he weighs pretty close to me and I ride a 155... I wasn't rude about it, but I mean come on, I don't know what was going on in the rental shack that day.

You should be happy they atleast had the knowledge to give him a snowboard instead of a pair of ski's...not always the brightest bunch ..really hit and miss sometimes

Sounds like you did the right thing 155 is a good size for you and him in that weight range. Keep in mind that if its a directional board it may have a setback(longer nose than tail) so they may have compensated for this to try and "center" the bindings by moving them forward.

Thanks for the reply. The Rossignol board we got him after I believe is a twin. The first one he had, the board was directional, and the bindings were towards the back, the tail of the board was more flat then curved. I really was just trying to figure out how the rental staff who helped him thought it was a regular board. I thought maybe she was confused on which end was the front or something

It's all good though, we had a good day, and Canada won the hockey game at the end too
