I had a buddy of mine get invited out to a snowboard trip in Italy 2 weeks ago (lucky bastard!)
Anyways, he flew Delta, who lost his bag on the way there (they delivered it to him 24 hours later). However on the trip back, someone apparently STOLE his snowboard bag! At first it was just missing, but its been a couple of days and nothing has turned up... which means that it probably never will. Sucks for me, I lent him my backpack (which I spent 2 hours sewing a patch onto) and my platypus bladder. Sucks for him because his pants, jacket, new board (only 2 trips on it), new bindings, new goggles, and boots were in the bag. Delta only covers $600 worth of lost baggage/equipment, which will BARELY cover replacing a board/bindings/boots... much less his shell and goggles (and my stuff I lent him). DON'T TRUST ITALIAN BAGGAGE HANDLERS. Ship your stuff home via UPS! |

Wow, with that much gear I'd DEFINITELY make sure I had it all covered. I had an airline lose my bag with 2 boards and my wife's skis and poles inside. I got it back after only a couple days, but I was raging at the airline. I never trust those untrained monkeys who work at the airport (sorry if you work at the airport, but I hate you
).

I spent a few years travelling extensively with work to some weird and wonderful countries. I used to lug around $8000 worth of cameras/lenses and my laptop. All were insured and several times the bags went missing and once I waited a whole week in Khartoum, Sudan before they turned up. I had to buy some local clothes....not happy... made my ass look big hahaha.
For the cost of $20-$30 to make sure your gear somes home or at least gets fully replaced with NEW, you can't go wrong. |
