Default Fined for setting off avalanche: Right or Wrong?

Snowboarders fined for avalanche | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

The article says the ropes were marked. Not sure if that means there were signs on them indicating avalanche danger or not. I think that makes a huge difference because if there were no avalanche signs the resort should be fined. If there were avalanche signs I think at least $500 dollar fine would be in order for the trespassers.

At the same time I can see the gov't (US or Can) thinking, "hey maybe we can go after folks who set off avalanches and milk them for a G." They do that in NH to hikers who get lost or injured and need rescue. Not saying that's a totally bad idea but you have to look at each individual case and not just throw a blanket policy out there. At the same time I wonder if some folks would take as much risk in avalanche terrain if they knew they'd be handing over there next paycheck to the man if they got caught.

yeah, it said that they were fined for trespassing. Trespassing is bad. I think that they should be fined. And also, what they did was stupid. They're lucky that no one else was hurt, otherwise they'd probably be sued out the ass.

The fine is warranted... but the Scurfield brat should have been fined too: http://www.snowboardingforum.com/sno...er-fiasco.html

The big question is, why is an inbounds area that can run onto the ski out not being avy controlled?

They should have been fined. 1st off, if you are going to duck a rope, you have to follow rule #1. Don't get caught. Second, you better damn well know what the consequences are in the terrain you ducking the rope to get too. Obviously these guys were idiots and ventured into real avalanche terrain and set off a slide.

On the flip side. This is Sunshine. Didn't a certain owners son just duck a rope to ride in some avalanche terrain and got busted? Instead of him getting a ticket they fired staff. Really? Fuck you Sunshine...

Exactly, and if there's enough untracked snow on it that it will slide- a lot of folks will be scoping it out. Bomb it and open it for fuck sake.

seriously. I can't ever remember a resort having worse PR than this. Sunshine has earned itself a ton of bad press.

Sunshine is unbelievable. My girlfriend is from cowtown, she said Sunshine sucks anyways and people are better off at Lake Louise or somewhere else.
