I'm still a relative beginner as well actually, but I was good enough at the time that I could pretty much hit everything other than a couple blacks that I passed up. That place is just a huge resort though - the snow was phenomenal on the Italian side of Cervinia since most people stay on the other side of the Matterhorn.

Well, most of the medium to large resorts in Switzerland are not "cheap" but they are still a bit cheaper than the large U.S. resorts (when the Dollar isn't in the toilet). Most the places I hit this season ran from 55-70 CHF, and the famous places like Zermatt or St Moritz were about 80 CHF.
As far as my favorite, I would have to say Laax. It has a really nice vibe, with tons of opportunity for off piste riding and some wilder stuff like cliff drops if you're into that. It's also well-known as one of the best freestyle resorts in the region.
