It's scary how easy it is to fall into a well. Today on my final run, closing in on the parking lot, I mis-timed a bump in the trees and somehow ended up right up against a big pine and sunk in. Fortunately I was face-up and didn't sink too far in. I was able to belly crawl my way out, but I thought about the irony of having posted the link to this video just yesterday.

Being from the east this concept of death is foreign to me. Can someone explain to me how that happens? I imagine it has something to do with the fact that there is a ton of snow on the ground but the tree underneath doesnt have as much and you get 'caught' in the 'well' and then snow falls on top of you from the tree and buries you?

I'm really confused. In the east we measure snow by how much ice the snowmakers can blast overnight or, how much rain turns to ice pellets. :( While I dream of powder days, I do not want to encounter this if I head out west for sure!

^Just because your from the east does not spare you from death. There is above tree-line riding with very real avalanche danger in maine, new hampshire, vermont, and new york. Tree wells exist out east too. I was caught in one about 5 feet deep, right-side up thankfully. Let me tell you, it is not easy to climb out. Just because your not in the west does not mean mother nature spares you when it comes to all things snow related.
