Default Shipping board bag to resort????

Hey all,

I am planning a trip to Summit County this winter, specifically keystone and was curious about shipping my board bag to the resort. friends have told me they do it when going out west but when i mentioned it to the chick at keystone, she sounded like she had never heard of it????

so, 1) has anyone specifically shipped to keystone before?

and 2) if not keystone, but youve done it somewhere, what do i need to do to set this up?

thanks

Being from GA I have done both routes with going to keystone with my boards. Shipping is expensive if you have all your gear and board in the bag, plus the insurance will make it pricey. The upside for me was I was stopping at a friends house for 2 days in kansas then flying on to denver, so I did not want to pay bag fees twice. While I have not had a problem with this it is something you need to setup with the hotel or place you are staying at to hold it. I have never had a problem with checking my bags only costs 50 dollars. I also know if you join delta’s sky club (it is free) they allow you to check a second bag free so that is what I do. Personally I like having my boards with my when I leave the airport and hop in my rental or shuttle van. On a side note keystone is an amazing place plus you can go to breck just down the road if they get dumped on. Oh and the bar at the bottom of the main lift is awesome to wait at if the lift line is to long.

How much does it cost? I just travel with it. If you're flying Southwest it's free.

readimag - thanks for the info, im gonna look into the sky club thing for one, and also, probably just gonna check it....

i did speak to a diff person at keystone though and they gave me the info for shipping it there if i do decide to go that route. however, i will feel better if its with me, so i dont end up there waiting on my board due to a shipping companies mishaps

jdang - not sure on exact cost, but it doesnt look like its gonna be that bad to just check it....southwest it is free, however they dont fly out of atlanta, closest is birmingham, al which i considered. but dont really wanna drive 2 1/2 hours home after flying home from CO

thanks for the info guys, but pretty sure im just gonna check it on plane...

cant wait to hit up CO for the first time!!!! these next 4 months waiting are gonna be MISERABLE....at least i can start boarding here on the ice coast in just a few weeks, but honestly, id skip the first 3 months of riding over here, if i could wake up and it be Feb tomorrow!

Booked our flights for end of January. But do have a flight to Bay Area for early December so we should be in Tahoe for first sessions. After that it'll be a mix of Bear and Mammoth until Colorado.

also, another question, maybe to Readimag, since youve been out there before...

there are 5 of us going, and the shuttle price from airport to keystone is RIDICULOUS !! $165 per person! which is over $800... that said, we can rent a nice big suv for like $500 for the duratiion of our trip, but being southereners we are slightly concerned about driving to the resort ourselves..

so... 1) is the drive from airport to keystone fairly easy as far as
directions are concerned?

and 2) minus any bad snow storms obviously, should we expect to be
driving on snow covered roads and/or icy conditiions?

thanks

You basically take I-70 from the airport and Breck and Key are both like 10 miles off 70. I'm renting a car for 10 days and we're paying $300 total including insurance. Granted, it's very early season, but paying $165 per person is extortion. Is that round trip? If not, that's just insane.

it is roundtrip, but still ridicoulous...if it was just 2 or 3 people going, id probably do it for ease since price diff b/t that and rental wouldnt be much diff, but with 5 of us, its just insane to pay over $800 for transportation...

we are going in February, and i couldve rented a small suv like a rav 4 or something for $400 for 7 days, but again would be concerned since theres 5 of us with luggage and possibly board bags...so i bumped it up to the premium suv for like $550 which will be like a tahoe, expedition, or nissan armada

should work well for us....oh and im so FREAKING EXCITED...man this 4 months is gonna suck

The route is easy but you should be prepared to drive in winter conditions. If no one in your group has ever driven on ice then you're all gonna die...

...or just don't drive too fast or make any sudden movements on snow and ice. Give PLENTY of room for braking so you don't plow into the car in front of you.

I drove in and after a snow storm when I went for the first time. We knew to get a 4wd. But we were still slipping and sliding. Coming back from Keystone a semi jack knifed and we were stuck on the 70 for two hours not moving more than 30 feet. It was a little slippery but you just had to go slow. There were times though the car would just start sliding. Go slow, slower than you are comfortable with is my advice if you get caught in one. Like Toecutter says, leave plenty of room in front of you. I wouldn't even drive with a car in front of me I gave a huge cushion I don't care.
