How high are your arches?

If they are high you probably find that

1) your foot never feels fully secure which is why you feel the need to crank the laces to compensate
2) you probably curl your toes to try and prevent movement while you ride

Both can quickly cause/aggravate numbness in your toes

As mentioned, wearing thicker socks just puts extra pressure on your foot where you don't want it and doesn't secure your foot any more.

If you do have high arches then you need to get a footbed thats the right shape and the best route to that is probably getting a custom insole made. I can tell you that having your foot fully supported and in full contact is much more effective than cranking them tight and the feeling is night and day better in control as well as comfort.
