I have heard really good things about Light Works beta. It's free and open source. I downloaded it though, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do a goddamn thing with it.

It's hard to find a fully free video editor. There are a bunch around that are similar to windows movie maker but still won't be very great. You'd be much happier if you mustered up 100 bucks and bought a cheap editor. For now you could use a free trial of an Adobe video editor.

Windows movie maker isn't half bad for recreational edits. Wouldn't use it for anything you're trying to promote - but if you just want to make a simple shred movie it works fine.

op, nothing exists, believe me i have tried. windows movie is about the only thing you are going to find that is free, unlimited time, and leaves no water marks. honestly for a video editing program you are going to just have to buy one

If you don't like the way I drive, stay off the sidewalk.

Ttam has been searching for so long. The best free editor is videopad.

MM isn't half bad for recreational edits, I'll agree. There's nothing special about it and you can only do the basic stuff and it's really clunky in that point-and-click-even-an-idiot-can-use-it sort of way that made Bill Gates a billionaire, but it doesn't work with MOV format. OP would have to run files through a Mov -> Avi conversion software, first.

Sony Vegas Pro 10 is free if you can do a YouTube Tutorial search. It is simple, and if you have the drive, can take about 1 hour to be a pro at it.

Some of these posts are borderline hilarious. Saying that with the drive and 1 hour you can be pro at vegas is insulting to people that can ACTUALLY edit. Also saying that there are none and you absolutely have to buy non linear software is crazy too. As someone else has already mentioned light works is COMPLETELY free and open sourced. It may not be as easy as lets say fcp, vegas, premier, or others but it is completely free. Think about what kind of final product you would like to end up with and how much you are, would be willing to spend and then go from there. You may be able to get away with iMovie or movie maker. They are better than most think. If its not enough then try out light works. If that is too hard then you need to take the next step and invest in something. Final Cut X is 300 dollars and would be way more than enough to handle 99.9% of projects. If you don't have a mac you can download Adobe Premiere Elements 10 for under 100 bucks and you should be able to get by with that as well.

Edit: as for the .mov files, you could download mpeg stream clip for free and transcode them to whatever files work best with whatever software you end up getting.
