Opinions for a new car?

So my truck blew a head gasket last time I headed up into the mountains and now I'm in the market for a new car(the truck has a lot of miles on it and I'm not keen on throwing more money into it). Really bummed as it's pretty much put an early end to my snowboarding season.

Anyways, the thing is I have very little idea about what car models to even start looking at. It's purpose in winter would be to get me to mountains to go snowboarding, but I also would like to take it through backcountry roads for fun so I'm leaning towards getting another 4WD vehicle. Like most people though my car will be chauffering me around town and work for the majority of the time.

Basically what I'm looking for in a car is:

-4WD/AWD
-Hopefully something with better gas mileage than my truck(over 20mpg)
-Thinking some sort of cross-over or light SUV

Gonna start looking at local dealerships for any new 2011's they want to get off their lots and hopefully get a deal for something $15k or less.

So please toss me any recommendations of vehicles that you think fit into want I would want in car.

Get one of the new 4 door Jeep Wranglers! I know three people with them and they are pretty spacious, are good in the winter (of course), and I think get around 21 mpg. It's a great MAN car hahaha
