Default Gigi leaves Volcom for Nike

Gigi leaves volcom for Nike

Somewhat surprising news after 15 years with a company.
It makes sense, since Nike is obviously loaded and is willing to pay him more.

Meh, people move around and change teams in pro sports, its not always "the writing on the wall," sometimes it doesn't mean anything whatsoever.

Volcom still rules, its the "FUBU (For Us By Us)" of boardsports, with a punkrock youth against the establishment mantra for like 25 years... Not to mention TOP NOTCH quality.

Nike is what it always has been, take it or leave it. It has no appeal to me.

It's all about prolonging your career at this point for Gigi he's still a sick rider and this move was completely 100% money driven. Heard about it last week before it went all public and said meh who cares as long as he puts out good video parts.

Seeing how Nike handled the whole skateboarding thing, I'm not to worried. Sucks to see him go from Volcom though. They still got Bjorn and Landvik. Not to mention two of the biggest legends in the sport.

Volcom still has some heavy hitters and I like that they support and sponsor Brian Iguchi. They do so much all over the board sports industries, Gigi moving on and up is actually good for both companies.

Riders only have so many years in the sport before they wear out, exceptions like Terje, Iguchi and the rest of the old guys ( like me), but the really big jumps, and extremely long hours in the cold do take their toll. Riders are trying to rake in more retirement money while they can. Who would blame them? They gave up any normal life for snowboarding. Normal life = normal job, with benefits, retirement accounts, etc.....

Nike is a monster, but making that cheese riding snow is tough to beat. I like Gigi's Volcom outer ware, I will miss his line. I knew something was up looking at 2013 Volcom. I can't remember if there was his line or not, but it stuck me as very different

You guys are silly. Volcom isn't rider driven, it was bought by luxury goods consortium—PPR. They own shit like Prada, Gucci, Puma. It puts them on equal footing with nike. Vans? Owned by VF Corp—same people who own 7 for mankind, nautica, etc. They're all corporations, get real guys—most successful companies become less about love and more about money. I know a lot of people can't reconcile within their heads that companies that push things that we all love care more about the bottom line, but come on guys—at least Nike is PRIMARILY in the business of sponsoring athletics.

Another thing, Nike doesn't really drop its athletes—even when their scandals become PR nightmares—see Tiger Woods/Kobe Bryant/Ndamakong Suh. I think that shows a lot of loyalty.

What has Nike done wrong in the snowboard world?

The way I see it, they're pushing things forward so far.

There boots have been a HUGE success.

Myself and my lady both have some Nike outerwear as well, it's all high quality.

I doubt I'll ever own a different snowboard boot until someone makes something superior for my foot
