Help on building rail? - Snowboarding Forum

Hey guys, i'm building a backyard trick park this year (cannon rail, ollie on rail, street style rail, box) and I'm currently building the street style rail. I got the ABS pipes from a friend doing renovations, and I joined 2 pipes to make it an even 10 feet long.

My current problem is: how should I attach the pipe to the rail? I was thinking of either doing 1 of 2 options: going trough the rail from the top and then sanding down the holes in the rail I leave, or going from the bottom and having the screws go into a plank of wood that goes on the inside of the plastic tube. first would be stronger, but second wouldn't leave holes in the rail.

What option do you think is better, or do you have another idea?

While I don't see a problem with going through the top, I can't really see a little screw hole hookin' you up.

I could be wrong, & personally I'd try to go with as little as possible

In theory, if you used the same amount of screws, going through the top would probably be stronger.

But who says you have to use the same amount of screws.

If you went through the bottom you could blast a million screws through it & it wouldn't matter.

Then the latter would be stronger. IMO.

If you go from the bottom pre drill the wood with holes bigger than the threads of the screw, so the screw loosely slides through the hole. You will get a better hold.

Thanks for the tip on screws. I had to think about it for a sec before it made sense (I'm very tired)

By the way, thanks for the heads up on the deal at SportCheck on coupons, I got my bike tuned up last week, and it runs as smooth as butter.

I've had arguments with a friend of mine about pre drilling. He seems to think the size of the pre drilled holes doesn't matter.
If the hole is smaller than the threads of the screw, you could put your finger in between the two pieces of wood screw in the screw & it WON'T squish your finger.
If it slides freely through the pre drilled hole, your finger will pop like a grape.

I had to do the Pepsi challenge with him, just to prove it.
I put my finger in his way & he put his finger in my way.
If anyone ever disagrees. Trust me when I say, the Pepsi challenge will make them a believer!

Isn't that the wickedest deal ever! Just the Tech shop coupons alone are worth $1,200 bucks.
Then there are the other ones, the 20% off even already on sale stuff isn't too bad.

I was trading the hot wax ones during the winter for lift tickets on Craigslist. Sold a whole bunch of bike/board tune ups on Craigs for ten bucks a piece.
Then you get a ridiculous amount of free ice skate sharpenings, 120 of them.
I sent an email to a few diff adds on Craigs for guys looking for hockey players, figured rather than trying to get a single person to buy them, I would go after the whole team. One guy bought 4 cards of the skate sharps @ $5 a card & a diff guy bought 6 @ $5.

I've brought 3 of my boards in there for the full meal deal, base gr/edges/hand wax(get the hand wax it's better)
& every time I'm in there I end up just giving out other coupons to the people in front & behind me in the line.
It's just a nice thing to do. They get stoked & it's good karma.

Tell every one you know, as far as I know your the only person that was paying attention & got them.

Well.. The only person to thank me anyway, so I'm assuming your the only person to get them.
Not a single person responded to the west coast thread I posted.
I'm on my second batch, had some sent to my girlfriends house.

I think I'll be getting a few more too!

This is the final product!

I used your screwing method from the bottom, and then added 2 wedges along the length of it to add side to side strength (the non-painted part).

Thanks again for all your help. I don't think I'm going to be bored at all this winter (unless it doesn't snow)

If your gonna go through all the trouble of building a rail, you should build yourself a snow maker too!
