When Ive tried to work out barefoot before I felt like I was going to injure myself a lot easier.
You will injure yourself if you just try to go barefoot instantaneously... they recommend running a quarter of a mile your first time out (that's about 1-2 minutes) and the only increasing your distance by 10% each run. Running every day that means you won't even get to 1 mile (say 8 mins) until your 14th run (2 weeks). After a month (30th run), you'll be at 4 miles. The idea is that you've spent most of your adult life forgetting how to run barefoot, and so it's going to take a while for you to "unlearn" your bad habits.

One thing about barefoot running is the moment your foot/leg starts hurting... you stop IMMEDIATELY (you are done for the day). Toughing it out is what causes problem (and theory is that normal running shoes let you ignore the issue much longer... but it's still quietly damaging your body). Running barefoot gives you INSTANT feedback that your running form is wrong in the form of pain (why else would your feet have so many nerve endings?)

My friend started running a couple of years ago and has run 4-5 marathons (I've lost track) in Fivefingers and now Lunas.

I have a pair of Fivefingers, but anything over 10 miles I still use my regular running shoes. I use the Fivefinger mainly to cross-train running on grassfields.
