I bought a book called "The Snowboard Book" by Llowel Hart and read that cover to cover. It is an awesome resource for anyone just getting into this for the first time. After I read that, I took the never ever beginner group lesson and was linking turns crudely in 2 hours. From there I just went riding on the bunny hill and green runs every weekend and after about 5 or 6 times had a list of specific issues I was struggling with and paid for a 2 hour private lesson to address those specific things which dialed it in and that day I was doing blues and easy blacks.
As an instructor now, I know I am biasesd, but even from personal experience I think taking a lesson or two to get started is the way to go. What lessons do if taken from AASI certified instructors is to get you riding proper and efficient from the start and reduces most of the bad habbits people pick up from watching friends or other riders.
This might sound kind of rediculous, but I skiied before I started snowboarding so I had the concept of how snow sports work and I skateboard a lot, so pretty much I just winged it and was naturally good after the first run or two.

how much is a private lesson with a AASI certified instructor?
I took a never-ever lesson, didn't learn squat, and have been winging it ever since . The ABC of Snowboarding site and this site helped a lot. I could link turns on my second day, but I was still out of control and falling a lot. Gonna try some freestyle lessons next season.
