Studs are legal in Colorado but I don`t think they are in California and I am not sure about Nevada, I`m guessing not. Any state that allows them also has strict regulatons regarding the season. Here in Oregon they must be off the car by April 1 but this year they extended it because of the extrordiary snowfall this spring.

I think you made the right call. Mt. Hood gets that 32 degree instant ice shit on the roads and honestly highway 26 is about as bad as anywhere I have drivien and I can count on one hand the number of times I chained up my 2WD Ranger to get up the pass. Keep good rubber on it and one thing you should ask your tire shop is about siping the tires; that really helps on ice. Carry a good set of chains and you will be fine.
