Default May 21`st Powder Day at Mt. Hood!

So, after a week of Portland area temperatures hitting the the 100 F mark last week, La Nina returned with a vengeance. The snow level dropped and I awoke to 4 inches of fresh snow and 28 F at Timberline Lodge. As I drove up the access road, I was glad to have 4 wheel drive for this was a very wet, heavy snow and the parking lot was drifted several feet deep in places. Had awesome tree runs today with this 4 inch dump on top of a firm base layer. In places it was over a foot deep and made for heavenly tree runs. Did`nt hit the park but about about a half dozen times as the heavy snow all day long made for very disorienting flat light conditions. That damn rainbow box kicked my ass but good today and I slammed on it pretty good. What an amazing treat this was after a week of local driving in a truck with a broken A\C and 100 F temperatures!

Here is today`s snowboard stoke!

Timberline Road leaving Government Camp, Oregon

Riding up Stormin Norman

Pow in the trees

Winter Wonderland!

Really dumping

Dropping over to Pucci

Got another 3 inches while riding today for a total of 7 inches!

Still coming down on the way home

As hard as it rained all the way from Government Camp to Portland, Timberline could see a foot overnight if it continues. What an amazing year this has been and still seems to be. I wish Meadows had`nt pulled the plug prematurely!

NIOCE!!!

It seems that this storm is just starting to hit the mountains here. Saturday could be yet another powder day. So much for my rockclimbing plans...

Hey wolfie, thanks for sending weather our way. The mountains are now under a winter storm warning. Could be very good, maybe even tomorrow. I'll be watching snotel tonight and tomorrow as I am not feeling well... *cough*

No problem...I`ll keep sticking the pins in my weather voodoo doll..... I checked Timberline this morning and so far we got 14 inches out of this one. At one point yesterday, chains were required on Timberline road. It looks like the middle of January up there and at the lodge, there is 179 inches still on the ground and a year total now of 847 inches; that is 70 feet of snow or a 7 story building!!! There is going to be patches of snow I think well into August this year it seems. Right now the river runners are saying the local rivers are too dangerous to run and some of the commercial outfits are using larger boats due to the enormous CFS rates. I can`t wait for July`s 100 F weather on the Deschutes now that I have that larger raft!!!

Yeah, rafting season is definitely going to be huge here and unfortunately deadly. Every time we have an unusual snow pack like this, we have some tragedy come the melt off. I would love to be wrong, but years past tell me there are going to be some sad stories in June.
