Returned to Boarding after 10+ years
Hey y'all. I'm new to the forum...and old skiier/boarder coming back to the sport.
I grew up in Maine, basically at Sugarloaf mountain. I went to college basically at Sunday River (lol) moved to NYC to chase a career and sadly ended my boarding days.
I recently got sent to a 3 month assignment in the Bay Area Cali. I got sick of watching the paint dry in my hotel room, so I had the hubby send my apparel and I headed up to Northstar one day!
Soooo...here I am, back hooked HARDCORE. Seriously..why did I stop riding?
I'm hoping someone is in the same phsyical/head space as me because I have a couple questions.
1) 1 week on from my boarding trip, my calves and quads are still buring. See when I was a youngin, I never had to try to stay in shape. It just happened. Because being 16 is so much more awesome phsyically than being 35. Does this fix itself if I ride every other weekend for rhe rest of thw season or I am looking at hitting the gym and doing squats and box jumps?
2) I'm looking a purchasing a Rome intermediate all mountain board. The Rome Vinyl 2012 is on sale at EVO for $169. When I rode as a kid it actually predated park jibbing and twin tips. My last season at the Loaf they started the outlines of pipe. I used to ride a 152...fast...and air was limited to popping off rollers. My rental board last week was a soft Burton 138 typical rental. But at lunch I just paid some extra to demo a 148 stiffer rocker board and I liked it better. I dont want to cut myself off from learning park really...just not something I've ever really done. Plus I'm kind of a big girl as in heavy. I'm 5'5" and weigh like 155 or so now. I'm mostly a mid pack 10-15 mile a week runner for my cardio (not opposed to doing interval training again) but if I start getting below 150 my ribs start showing and its gross. So does this mean shorter jib boards are pretty much out for me anyway?
3) Wth is with all the tech on the mountain now? Why are ppl riding with headphones and iPhones? Why do ppl have cameras duck taped to broom sticks and their helmets and crap? (I will say tho 90% of riders wearing helmets is good to see...no one wore a helmet when I was a kid. Its a welcomed cultural change.) Really...shut your crap off and have fun on the mountain. Its unsafe and it makes you look a little dbaggy.
Any suggestions on boards, conditioning and avoiding crappy snowboard YouTube videos will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance hive mind!
check out gnu "ladies choice", b-nice or b-pro...certianly it can't hurt box jumps and squats, but i'd imagine you will pick it up fast and get fairly efficient at riding again
I ride daily and still have some days that makes my body ache..... Working out will make your riding days better overall.
Videoing your runs can be helpful and fun but we only really do it a few rimes a year.
Demo a few boards at a good shop somewhere. Smokin snowboards is made in Tahoe/Reno and are excellent quality boards. Their women's PYT is a great all around board. Your board size should be around 144-148. In the newer tech boards. 144 more playful. 148/150 for when you start going faster again....
Rome Vinyl is a good board, bought one for a friend and she loves it. It's not really all that intermediate, it's the women's version of the Mod Rocker, but it should shred the mountain great and really good on jumps.
Squats (front and back), deadlifts, lunges, good mornings, Romanian deadlifts, all good things for your legs and core. Don't ignore your upper body too much either to keep muscle balance. I also love to beat the crap out of old tires with sledgehammers of assorted weights with assorted intervals of work and rest, great whole body workout combined with conditioning at the same time. Running stairs is great for the legs as well.
Love the 'Loaf and hoping to get some nice spring boarding up there in April.
Edit: Have a contour camera myself, it's nice to watch some videos in the summer when I'm wishing there was snow on the ground to ride.
Thanks for the input y'all. Yeah the Loaf is a special place man. Drink it up! Lol...good mornings, romanian deadlifts and running stairs just made me flash back to my years on my high school ski team! Arrrrgh. All good though. I can get on that. Running is good for general cardio but its extremely efficient and theres really no muscle confusion. I'll still admit to breathing a little heavy on some skates last weekend though! Snowboarding must be really good exercise.
I was thinking...get a cheap all mtn board and Craigslist it/pawn when I leave Cali. I am there until April 30th which is perfect for the next 4 Sundays at Tahoe. The cheap Burton progression rental was $42 and a whole day demo board on mountain was $72! None of the local shops I looked at (basically Any Moutain sports) had off site demo snowboards. I didnt want to get $200 in on demos if I can get a cheap but better than rental set up for $250. Then next season I'll get a real board. I did eye that GNU B-Nice too! There was a K2 board that loooked decent too. I'm 99% sure I'm going stiffer, edgier and fast rather than buttery park board. I still have to go home to the east coast and compared to Tahoe pow...man we got some crappy ice floes to ride on!
I also travel enough for work that I have platinum status on US Air so I dont pay bag fees. So if I catch the right deal on a Lib Tech or GNU I'm snatching it! Wait..are Lib Techs still as amazingly orgasmic rides?
Oh and I didnt mean to offend with the camera thing! I totally get how watching video of your form makes a ton of sense for improving. But since I just came from Northstar (which is the anti Sugarloaf) and spent the day watching ppl with more money than brains parked under rollers so they could get a base shot of their buddy...I really got turned off by "camera riders." Lol. I'm so holding the line on iPods though. Sooo dangerous. I was freaked to find out helmets have ear bud inserts! Its like implicitly saying "hey you gotta helmet, go be reckless!"
Edited to add: Oh my god...I just realized I used to smoke a joint and barrell down steeps at 40 MPH with nothing but a beanie to protect my brain. I am so glad I dont have kids. I need to call every adult authority figure I ever had and apologize like right now.
