Bought a set up on clearance - Snowboarding Forum

I'm stoked I bought a set up on clearance so I dont have to ride Burton progression rentals for my last couple spring days out.

I grabbed that Rome Vinyl Rocker since the deal was too good for a Rome board. Wih an extra discount it was like $138. Thats crazy. And it looks like really nice build quality too. I ended up with K2 Cassette bindings because they seemed really good for the price (they were like Morrow/Lamar/LTD price range!) Rachet is a bit stiff to use but they are comfy. I ended up with Ride boots because they just fit better than the Burtons I tried...wierd but true. I actually liked Rides quick lacing liner system better than Burtons even though they were very similar. I feel like I got a solid intermediate get back into boarding setup for like $275. Succes!

I got it all mounted and all...but what else do I have to do to prep this for a few spring rides? I have to pack out the boots a bit before we get to the hill right? Should I wear to the gym? Lol. Or just bum around in em?

Does a new base need an initial wax? It seems ok...but its been a long time since i bought gear.

Also? Do you guys travel with just a tool or with extra hardware too? I'm sure i will have to make some adjustments during the day so I did buy a tool (riding with a #3 philips seems dangerous!) But the bindings mounted over gasket feel like they arent held in tight enough. It was a bitch to get em in the first place. But I'm afraid I will pop a screw or something and I am wondering if I should shove some extra in my pocket. Or is is normal that bindings dont feel like they are screwed in to deep?

Anything else I need to do to this thing? Seems like a total idiot question, but a LOT has chaged in tech and gear while I wasnt looking. Seems better safe than "wreck new setup."

If this means you are not sure how much bite you have on the bindings in the inserts I would be careful here. Put some locktite on the threads and mount the binding. Take one of the screws out and make sure you are getting plenty of thread into those inserts (the locktite will clue you in here). If you strip these things out, you are screwed.

Pick up a pocket tool. They come in many varieties. I have an old Burton one that is very compact and comes in handy. IMO the only real way to break in boots is to ride in them. I would wax the board, it never hurts.

If you are riding in spring conditions, wax with some warmer weather stuff. Definitely wear the boots around as much as possible before riding. Don't heat the liners. Don't wear extra or thicker socks. Just your normal snowboarding socks, tighten up the boots and go about your day as long as possible. It will definitely make your feet hurt less on your first day out.

Sweet thanks for the tip. I'll hit the shop tonight (living in a hotel still so no iron.) I'll also pack the boots out after work some today.

Yeah it just feels like I could only get like one good turn with the binding screw because i put the plate over the rubber gasket that came with the bindings. I had heard that K2 plates especially scuff up top sheets. I'm not planning on reselling my board or anything. It was like $30 on the first ride. But I heard gasket adds cusion, reduces chatter etc so I just used it cuz it was there. But its just thick enough to make screwing it the plates difficult. It feels solid when I pick up the board...but i wont know till i start turning if it is solid.

Has anyone popped screws this way? I not reselling this gear so should i just ditch the gasket? If the bindings come off...I lose the cost of lift ticket, hotel room, and gas so I'll just stay safe and carry some extra hardware.

Leave it out in the cold for a while, then see if you can get a few extra turns on it.

Can you make the bindings move (side-to-side or forward-back) with your hands? Cause if not it's probably fine. Ultimately, you can ditch the gasket if you're not worried about the top-sheet.

Also, the factory wax will probably get the job done for at least a couple of days if you just want to get out on the snow and check it all out.

They dont move when using my hands. And no movement with popping on the carpet. So I'm hoping it'll be all good. Yeah if I feel any movement at all turning, I'll prolly just ditch the gasket.

As an aside I really like this board so far. Obviously I havent ridden it...but its totally a board board. Nice and stiff. But with pop. It actually feels like a board under your feet. God those Burton progression boards you get at the rental desk are so ungodly soft. Even slow turns they spin out of. I really dont get why they give that pile of mush to a beginner.
