I see that dogfunk has all of their Thule racks on sale for the next week or so. My car has a factory rack and I was curious about the Thule Snowcat. Anyone had experience with this rack system?

I hated them ok maybe that is a little strong of a word but I really dislike them. This is what I had Thule Universal Flat Top with Locks from Dogfunk.com now I have a roof box and love it all the gear fits up there and not in the suv. The reason I really dislike them is they only really fit one board or a pair of skies so you have to go to the other side of the car to get the board/skies off.

The ones I had where awesome never had a problem with them ever. The ones you are looking at I felt like they have to much play at highway speed. They moved up and down way to much for me so I went with the ones that attached with the factory cross bars not made their own.

Never used it but ive seen them. Over all it just seems limiting having your usable rack area split up in to two seperate units. Also Thule doesn't offer the ability to raise one end for binding clearance. Personally I'm using the Yakima wb300 but the fat Cat 6 is the same except color its the same as the fat cat 6 and can fit 4 boards or 6 skid or whatever combination there of. Wb300 does come with chanel. Hardware the fat cat doesn't. The hardware is avialable seperatly or available. At the hardware store

For my car I had to use the entire system and I went Yakiama as well.

Just from looks the limited board space and having to go to both sides of the car to lock and unlock the boards would be a pain, doable but not worth it to me.

I'm thinking of upgrading my rack to the Fat Cat this season. I'll have to see how the funds are...

Depending on how your bars are you could have enough space to put boards on bindings down. The racks that elevate on a side really do help in this regard. The feet that clamp to your factory bars or car have the option to add locks to them. Of course it'll cost you more. Yakima does the exact same. Inno racks work with both yakima and thule systems. I believe they are still around and you generally find steeper discounts in the backcountry.com sites for thos racks. You might look and see if those are offered for your board carrier.

I have heard of alot failures on the fat cat where the top and bottom comes together. you just have to make sure that the two are fully clicked together. that fist click really does not do much other then trick you into thinking it is locked. also you have to lock it so you know it will stay closed or at least that is what my friend does with his.

Yakima did have a ski carrier that was prone to blowing up. I am sure it was a manufacturing defect that wasn't caught. I think they did pay out people who lost their gear. Make an honest accounting of what you lost and exactly what carrier you were using. Make and year if possible. Then shoot them an email. Of course if they hem and haw you can always post their response here. You'd be surprised what a forum can do for you.

i used the thule snowcat for 2 seasons on a Jeep Liberty and had ZERO issues. it worked great. it never popped open, ever came loose.
I actually still have mine but got rid of the Liberty so it's just sitting in my basement.
If you're considering buying one, let me know. i'll sell you mine if you'd like
