I'm sure some of you have seen this video of some snowboarders trying to gain petitions for snowboarders to be allowed to snowboard at Alta. Whether they were legit, or it's just for show...still pretty interesting to see what skiers still think of snowboarding. But the guy wearing the Alta Snowboarding Team hoodie was pretty epic...
I have a feeling when we're old snowboarding will be looked at as the old people sport and more kids will pick up skiing again... kids always feel a need to rebel against what their parents want for them.. which is why half of us all ditched the skis of their childhood in the first place. Pretty sure if we all force snowboarding on our kids, by the time they're 13 they may want to be like "no dad, I think I want skis today..." Either way, if they're die hard and can rip harder than most everyone else on the mountain I'm stoked for em. Besides, I like skiers.. the ones that really are skiers to the core with sick style. Not you're typical Alta bunch. I'm just certain generations down there might be some sort of pattern between the sports with each generation.
This is already happening here. Its just normal, that every kid learns to skie in our area (we look at mountains 11000ft high from our city). But some years ago, as soon as the kids managed to pizza, they changed to boards. Now not only the small kids but also the older, cool kids (now it hurts... the "kids" around 20) do ski. Fat freeride skies became very popular the last 2 or 3 years. That's the cool thing now. Riding one plank is yesterday . In our resort, it's us oldies that still snowboard.
And it's not only the young ones... many friends who did snowboard went back to skies. Some of them because they only spend few days on the mountain and never really picked it up and its easier to be a bad skier than a bad boarder, some of them (good skiers) just never got used to one plank and switch to telly skies (the other hot thing now), some are very into touring and went back to skies cos of the skinning advantages over snowshoes/ascent skies. Splitboards will change that again, I guess, but they are not yet well known. I have zero female friends who rides snowboards, male a little (schrinking!) pack. Ten years ago, they all did.
the alta vid is crazy; some of the stupid shit that skiers said.
i started as a skier and switched when i moved to cali because all my friends were snowboarders, and i figured what the hell. after getting to a decent level of each i just stuck with snowboarding more.
i think it is going to be less and less about which looks cooler and more about which has a bigger impact on the individual. the boots, not having to worry about a yard-sales, and my skateboarding background were big factors with me.
haha yard sale. My problem was I just had too much going on, 2 skies 2 poles and always worried about crossing my tips and bam....yard sale. Snowboarding for me is simpler and more enjoyable.
What the hell would they say if I showed up with a split board?! Board half way down that bitch, enough to piss people off. Ditch in the woods and split, ride the rest of the way down and look at everybody..."what?!"
People have snowboarded Alta for years. Here is the thing, they really don't give a shit about people riding in the area. They just give a shit if you are riding the lifts. So if you are a good split skier, you might be able to get away with it.
On the flip side, if you have a splitboard, why the fuck would you be messing with a ski area? I know I've got much better and way more entertaining things I can do on my split than ride a stupid tracked out crowded ski area. There is a much more challenging and rewarding world waiting for you and your split to explore.
I don't get how Alta can be skiers only when its on public land? Wouldn't that technically be discrimination against a group of people? I'm pretty sure that if snowboarders actually gave a shit we could get it overturned but we don't.
i think it is bullshit, but i like the fact that it gets all those skiers who have a stick up their asses about snowboarders off of other mountains. i mean you know their are some douches who travel extra miles to Alta just so they don't have to deal with us "hooligans."
Think about it. If Alta allows snowboarding,
1. All the snobs who go there to get away from us will disperse back into the general population. With the rest of us. pewpewpew
2. The snobs who remain will still be dicks.
3. The snowboarders who go there will be dicks because the snobs are being dicks.
4. DICK FIGHT!
5. Everyone's top sheets get fucked from passive aggressive dick fighting in the lift lines, every one dies.
I'm glad I have never had problems with ass skiers bugging me. Other than them telling me I was doing moguls wrong, AKA not making them bigger. But I haven't been riding long at all and I stop and bring them their yardsales often, creating goodwill.
1 of my skier friends is going to try 1 stick this year, and we got another new guy coming to board too!
I absolutely LOVE collecting a yard sale for a skier and bringing it back to them! I believe that most of the rivalries between skiers and boarders have dried up in recent times or are only referred to in jest. However it still feels like a small victory for my team when I slide down to a slightly mangled body with a pair of skis and/or poles under my arm and help get them back on their feet.
^^ this of course works especially well if she's real cute k:
