Just wondering what everyone's snow prediction is for this year. The mountain near calgary got there first snow today! I am hoping a big snowfall at lake louise, kicking horse, fernie, and schweitzer! I checked the farmer almanac and it said southern BC is going to get dumped on. I am intested to see what everyone else thinks this season will bring...?
Is Whistler considered Southern BC in this context? I mean, looking at a map it obviously is. but do they just mean the southern end of the Rockies, Trans Canadian Highway and lower, or can I take it that those farmer types are predicting a good one for Whistler as well?
Whistler is a bit different microclimate than Vancouver, but they're predicting a very wet fall and pretty sure winter in the city. In the Whis village it's below freezing way more often and consequently snows way more, but the precip isn't always the same. I find Whistler gets a lot of little dustings and regular fresh than the north shore mountains that seem to mostly get big dumps of wet Cascadia pow when the temp in the city is down around 6° or so and the rain is hammering.
After last year being one of the driest winters on record, and it still being an at least okay year snow-wise in the mountains I wouldn't be surprised if this year had lots, assuming the predictions are any indication. I've heard some mixed things about the snow predictions though, just laying out what I know about the climate here to maybe make a guess.

I'm never scared to not get enough precipitation. Some of the biggest European rivers originate in this little country. A bad winter thus is a warm winter in which especially lower resorts can have problems. But if it happend to be a warm winter with mainly rain in the lower regions, there's always higher peaks, that will have snow. And there's still glaciers. No, not concerned. But I'd definitely prefer a very cold winter like in the last two years, with heaps of pow, even if this means constant traffic chaos in the city and jams due to snow covered highways.
Cold, snow filled winters are definitely a good thing. It keeps the natural balance in the ecosystem and helps keep our precious glaciers and plenty of other important fixtures in tact.
Here in Europe I heard talk about another cold and long winter. I hope this is true, would be awesome getting an extended season again like last year.
