Hey there,

I used to live in Fairbanks; well, Eielson AFB to be exact. Your best bet is to go to Mt. Auroa Ski Land. They have rentals and instruction. To get there take the Stese Highway out of town and at mile post 21 the turn off to Mt. Auroa is on the right. This is also an incredible place to watch and photograph the northern lights to be away from the light polution of Fairbanks.

Mt. Aurora Ski Land

Another ski area is at Moose Mountain out by the U of A Fairbanks. This is an interesting set up for they have no chairlifts;they bu people bck to the top of the hill. Moose Mountain also has a ski & snowboard school. Take Sheep Creek road out to Murphy Dome road, then turn off on moose Mountain road.

Shredthemoose

Once you get proficient at snowboarding, there are a lot of backcountry opportunities around Fairbanks; the best hills are out on the Chena Hot Springs road. A great area is the Granite Tors Trail. If the snow is good, there are huge, wide open glades up top. Down south on the Richardson Highway at paxon, you have the Alaska Range which as you know is huge.

I'd love to get out to Alaska sometime. I'll make a trip out there someday... it looks beautiful.

Alaska is awesome. I lived in Fairbanks from 1984 through 1987. I also did a TDY for 3 months at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage. I had`nt even heard of snowboarding back then! I did do a little skiing though; never was any good at it. I did a lot of backpacking around Fairbanks and in Denali National Park. Nothing like hiking and fishing at midnight with no need of a flashlight..

Here is a great shot I got of Mt. McKinly from an Alaska Airlines jet flying to Anchorage. We were at 30,000 ft. Mt. McKinley is 20,300 feet give a take some change.

I`ll post a few more later...going to go see that movie "no End in Sight"...

If you have`nt already been there, go check out the Chena Pumphouse. It`s a great saloon and when I was there, the best steaks in Fairbanks!

The Pump House Restaurant - Fairbanks, Alaska

Here is the information about the Granite Tors. In winter, it could be a good back country snowboard route. While there is nothing super steep, the tree glades and dry 20 below Fairbanks pow would make for a fun day of shredding.
