"Record week for snowmaking

It's been a huge week for snowmaking this last week. At Whakapapa they've made a record amount of snow for this time of year thanks to some lovely cold dry weather that made the conditions for our snowmaking crew perfect. We got a lovely dump of natural snow over the weekend but still need more to open the upper mountain.

So it's looking at this stage like we'll be opening the Alpine Meadow at Turoa and Happy Valley at Whakapapa this weekend as planned thanks to all the wonderful man-made snow. We'll keep you posted on the rest of the mountain as conditions change."

doesnt sound too good.... 15cm base turoa and 20cm at whakapapa...think i might skip goin up there for a week unless something amazing happens.

Earliest opening for Ruapehu since 1992
New 3:20PM Thursday June 12, 2008

Turoa and Whakapapa skifield operators say good snow conditions mean they can open lower slopes on Saturday, the earliest in the year since 1992.

Both ski areas will open on Saturday, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts said today.

Both ski areas had had good snowmaking conditions over the last week with cold temperatures and low humidity.

Mt Ruapehu marketing manager Mike Smith said snowmaking and good natural snowfalls were building the bases on the upper slopes.

"Early indications are very positive for the 2008 season, and it is fantastic to be opening earlier than in previous years," he said.

"One or two good natural snowfalls on the upper slopes will allow groomers to start making trails and more lifts to open over the next couple of weeks."

"It is DUMPING!! WOOOHHHOOOOO!!

Oh yeah…. It’s snowing!!! Both Whakapapa and Turoa[Mt. Ruapehu] are experiencing heavy snow showers and blizzard conditions today. Both mountain roads have been CLOSED due to snow down to low levels. Oh happy days… we might even get snow in town tonight!! Even better news is this storm is going to hammer Mt Ruapehu for another few days yet.. watch this space."

- mtruapehu.com

snowreport.co.nz predicts both feilds to have 160cm - 170cm by Sunday

watch this space indeed, storms predicted through out the week. The south island doesn't miss out either.

"Skiers and riders enjoyed 18cm of fresh snow at Canterbury’s Mt Hutt today (June 23)

...and more terrain to play on with the opening of The Towers.

Mt Hutt Assistant Ski Area Manager James McKenzie said the mountain was looking superb and the skiing and riding was fantastic on trail (including Broadway pictured) and off trail.

“We’re loving the new snow and everyone’s having a brilliant time out there, which is what it’s all about,” he said.

“We’ve also been snowmaking for 10 hours today and will resume tonight and into tomorrow when the temperatures are expected to drop again,” he added.

Mt Hutt has a current base of 50cm and all facilities, including the Sky High Café, Skiwiland (day care), Rental and Repair, Snow Shop and Snow Sports School, are open."
