If you're going to Squaw anyway, it couldn't hurt to try. Bring it with you the next morning and whine and plead and beg. Otherwise, fork over the cash. SV has the most expensive lift tix in Tahoe. Now is the time to look for deals. I never, ever pay full price for a lift ticket, but I recall last time we were there the best deal we could find was still $64. But it's better than $80.

We usually stay at Tahoe for two weeks, so we get a Snow Bomb card. You can get a free one online, but the deals aren't as plentiful. If you get a paid Snow Bomb card ($60 last time we went) it comes with a free lift ticket to somewhere, and then there are discounts at various mountains on different days. Check 'em out at Snowbomb.com. You never know...the first year we went they were doing an online slot machine promo...just keep playing, eventually you'll win. We got two free tix to Heavenly. And Shell stations were offering 2-for-1 Northstar tix with min. 10 gallons, but since you won't have a car that doesn't help you. With the economy sucking, I'd bet there will be a few deals this year. Spend some time with the google. You'll probably be able to find something.

i did a trip to tahoe in the beginning of this year. we did heavenly and squaw. i would never go back to squaw again. the lack of diverse terrain and the terrain parks were just as bad as they are here in the midwest. the bowls were iced over and the terrain was slush. no compromise whatsoever. heavenly was a nice mountain, pretty good terrain park, large mtn, but it was pretty damn busy for an average weekend. the hiking was a bit much since there's a lot of flat terrain and lifts that don't take you where they should or want to.

LACK of diverse terrain at Squaw?! You can't be serious! What did you do, just take the gondola up to High Camp and ride Main Street with the tourists all day? I've been to Squaw 6-8 times and still haven't ridden all of it. The fact that you thought Heavenly was better speaks volumes. What Heavenly has going for it is the view from the ridge, which is spectacular (and there is something cool about riding in two states in one run). I admit to having a couple proverbial "best days ever" at Heavenly, but they were because of perfect powder and great friends. Otherwise, it's an overcrowded maze...get separated from someone in your party, you likely won't see them again till the parking lot. And it's crazy to say Squaw sucked because it was icy. We've all hit mountains on bad days, that just means the weather sucked, not necessarily the mountain.
I maintain that SV is a must-visit for the Tahoe noob. Between the epic terrain and the history, it's an experience, not just a ski trip. Just don't spend your day riding the middle around High Camp. Last edited by surfinsnow; 11-23-2011 at 06:48 AM. Reason: Typos |
