Flying into Reno, stay in North Lake. Squaw, Alpine Meadows, Homewood are all minutes away, close to each other, and Northstar and Sugarbowl are a short drive away. SLT has Heavenly (meh...except for the views) and Sierra, but you're closer to Kirkwood...the best Tahoe has to offer, even though it's not really at Lake Tahoe (45 minutes away).
South Lake is fun for late nights partying, casinos, etc...it's a honky tonk. Lots of neon and tackiness. North Lake is California, laid back, with some good restaurants but no real night life. Another thing to consider is the driving. Even if you get hammered by one of Tahoe's famous snow dumps, you'll be close by a great selection of mountains on navigable roads. They close the road along the west side of the lake if it so much as hints of snow, so if you stay in SLT you could be stuck with nowhere to ride but Heavenly (if it's snowing hard, the Carson Pass down to Kirkwood could also be closed, or on chain control).
We rent a chalet in Tahoe City from a family friend, and then driven to SLT to spend the night at the Lakeside Inn to ride Heavenly and then get and early start to Kirkwood. You have to real close attention to the weather or you can be stuck someplace you don't want to be.
As for Utah, how long is your trip? I don't think it's exactly close by.
