Mammoth announced today that June Mountain would not be turning chairs next season. A really sad day for locals here in the Eastern Sierra, June was like our secret stash. I rode june way to many days to count and consider it one of my favorite powder mountains. The official press release sounds like something out of a bad 80's ski movie.

This is a bummer, but not really a huge surprise. June has always had problems being financially solvent. Living in the shadow of Mammoth and all. I figured with Mammy buying them, that maybe that issue would resolve itself, but apparently not.

Damn. This sucks. I went to Mammoth for the first time this year and I was planning to go to June next season. Kind of puts a damper on the plans. It sucks. I've heard nothing but good things about this place and some of it's features were rated better than mammoths. Hopefully it changes. Maybe if Mammoth gets to crowded they'll reconsider.

If it's true that they've been operating at a loss every year since '86, I'm shocked they kept it open this long.

Wow, the woes continue for Mammoth. Now the town of Mammoth is filing for Bankruptcy.
http://www.firsttracksonline.com/201...ruptcy/http:// I didn't realize they were in over their heads like this. I remember the airport deal, but that was so long ago. Sounds like the civic leader wrote a check their butt's couldn't cash, and now everyone else suffers for it. What else is new? |

Looks like the snowgods definitely answered a lot of locals' prayers up there b/c I haven't seen so much POW in a december since 2010 up there. There were a lot of restaurants in full swing, lines out the door in some places (Toomey's was helplessly packed Saturday night) and events are taking place up at Canyon Lodge. One of the cashier's I was talking to is a June native, and he told me if conditions maintain themselves for the time being, June is gonna open up next season, but will remain closed this season. |

As of last month, June is re-opening for the 2013-14 season. Just waiting for approval from Forest Service for their more family oriented plan for the mtn.
