Default mammoth for rest of season or mt. hood?

I'm thinking of going to Japan for 2 weeks then come back for spring skiing at either Mammoth or Mt. Hood.

I've done Mammoth a lot more than Hood, and love Mammoth but it is still $999 whereas Meadows spring pass is $139. Does Mammoth do a spring pass? How are the conditions looking at Mammoth this year?

If I had the choice. Hood.

I haven't been to either (but perhaps will go to Mammoth next week after a mini storm). But two things jump at me right off the bat.

Price. $1k vs a couple hundred bucks? No brainer.
Location. Portland is close enough for the days you want a city. Portland = great food and beer.

Depending on how late in the season you go, It is not exactly a spring pass but , but late in the season, some time in April, they MIGHT offer the MVP pass. It is next year's season pass for like $600. So you can get late spring and all next year. The availability of the MVP pass is not guarenteed.

Ive looked into spring trips to hood and yes the spring pass is a bargain compared to the MVP.

However one thing to consider is that Hood spins the chairs on weekends only. Maybe Fri-Sun. Mammoth will run them 7 days a week until they close. So if you're at Hood, then you are up there all week and you have to find non snowboarding entertainment. Maybe that's ok maybe it's not.

Mammoth reduces the ticket price in april to I think 75 a day (I know, still outragous) but they often do deals for mid week specials. Keep your eyes open. It can also be very cheap to stay up there in May. Ive bargained weekly rates at sleazy non chain motels. Usually with no house keeping included. If you have a bike, bring it. There's tons of great road and mtn biking. Ive done days where I board in the morning and bike in the evening. Its rad.

the cost of food up there will kill you however, there is NO way to eat cheap. Vons has mid week sales (usually wed or thur) but it's still expensive. Driving down to Bishop is no cheaper and then thats a lot of gas $. A lot of people do the happy hour thing which is reasonable but I hate bar food. I'm very picky about what I eat quality wise and I hate eating out.

I've spent 2-3 weeks up there at a time and Ive brought two coolers of food and bags full of dry goods to make it work without spending a fortune on food. Usually I bring everything but meat with me, I will just pay the over inflated vons price for protein. Also, I've brought bags and bags of oranges of lemons from home with me (I have trees) use them to barter with other ski bums. lol.

Wrong info there. Meadows is 7 days a week through end of April, weekends in May if there is enough people. Timberline is open 7 days a week through May 28th for Spring Pass holders then summer season starts. And spring passes go on sale tomorrow for Timberline for $109. 3 months of boarding for that price is a steal. If you come up you can still get a spring pass to both for under $250.

that's good to know. Every time I've looked into going to hood, the resorts seem to be open weekends only.

Yeah the only place like that is Ski Bowl, and they are open nights 7 days a week, and days onyl Thur-Sunday. Also there are 2 beginner places that are only open weekends but they aren't worth mentioning. Timberline is the place to be in the spring though especially if you are into park riding. Their parks are easily the best on hood.
