Default Landing off balance

I broke my collar bone two weeks ago and I'm having surgery tomorrow to realign it and fuse a titanium plate to it.

I have some time to think about what happened now and I'm wondering if there was anything I could have done to A) land and ride off, or B) fall without breaking anything.

I broke it after landing a reasonably sized step down. BTW, how do I figure out what size the jump is? I got it on video so I was able to figure out what I did wrong on takeoff. I wasn't completely flat when I hit the jump, I was partially on my toes. I was going for a straight air with a grab since it was my first time hitting this jump, and I started to get my grab in, but when I felt that my balance was off I straightened up and my back arm started spinning. I didn't even know I was rolling the windows down until I saw the video. I landed leaning over my toe-side and went into the snow. I put my hands down and then my right shoulder (I'm goofy) went into the snow causing a compression break.

How do advanced riders recover from a bad landing position?

I started on really small jumps wich helped me get the control of my board and my body. I progresed gradualy, not going from a small bump to a 20 footer. Just tiny bit by tiny bit. And now i have no problem with my body control at all. Yeah i fall once in a while but im almost always in control in the air. And as you said in your post, the take-off is very important. If your already loosing you balance before you hit the jump, that mean you wont get the control you need in the air. So maybe the jump you tried was to big or there was too much of a "lauch" on it. But the only person who knows if the jump was of your level is yourself.

My balance wasn't off when I hit the lip, I just wasn't flat. The jump was bigger than I'm use to, but I was ready to step it up a bit. My landing was good but my center of gravity was just a bit off.

Yeah, sounds like just plain old bad luck. Shit happens and there is always risk involved and even more so in freestyle. It sounds like you know what you are doing, but just got unlucky. Hope the shoulder mends well!

Most injuries come from trying to brace yourself with arms/hands when falling. Just tuck everything in and roll with it.
