Default Snowboard Lessons On Video

There are many folks out there who either cannot afford to take a first time beginning snowboard lesson or their local resort has no ski & snowboard school. I am in the process of filming segments of a typical first time lesson and posting it to my Youtube account. I have had to keep each segment under 10 minutes and therefore, only touch upon the high points and give an example. This is no substitute for an actual lesson, but for those who do not have the opportunity, it is my hope that seeing the actual lesson will help make the written word a little clearer. I am not film producer, so please excuse the roughness of the video production. Also, during the filming the weather began to degrade and there is a lot of wind noise on some of the segments. At some point in the future, I hope to replace those segments.

This is the first installment of hopefully a growing list of lessons on tape. As I get each segment of the first time beginner lesson completed, I will add it to the list. When finished, this video lesson will cover everything typically covered in a person`s first time lesson up to making linked turns.

YouTube - Beginner Snowboard Lesson Part One
Skating, gliding and stopping

YouTube - Beginner Snowboard Lesson Part Two
Loading / unloading the chairlift and getting up after strapping in

YouTube - Beginner Snowboard Lesson Part Three
Sideslipping and Linked Traverses heel and toe side

YouTube - Beginner Snowboard Lesson Part Four
Garlands and linked turns

this is awesome. im definitely gonna show this video to a couple of friends that want to pick up snowboarding.

i'll still encourage them to take a lesson, but this will give them an idea of what to expect.

thanks a lot!

really cool snowolf! I wish I would have had these videos when I started. Probably would have saved me a lot of pain.

Great post. That will also help some of us vets give pointers to new riders. I know how to ride, but I have no fu*kin' idea how to teach someone how to ride!

Haha...I'm so there with you on that one! I know how to ride no problem...but damn I sucked at teaching someone else to ride. I think it's an art to be an instructor.

Friend: So how do I start
Me: So easy...stand up and go.
Friend: Why do I keep falling
Me: Because you're not doing it right
Friend: How do I do it right
Me: So easy...stand up and go

** OK yes it's not that extreme...but

Default Live and learn

Here is a video that I did last year showing a beginner lesson and an entry level freestyle park lesson. Chip and Billy Show Episode 12 (I'm Billy)

After watching Snowolf's vids, I noticed that I totally forgot to explain what was shown in the beginner lesson... Dooohhhh! Great explanation's Snowolf, you did a great job. Those vids will definitely help "The Watcher" for sure!

Note: You did not demonstrate "the wet noodle" or the "scorpion" Those moves are all the rage at my resort.

I have a problem the other way at times...I can tell someone exactly how to do something and also do a good job at movement annalysis to see what body movements a rider is making that need to be improved, but sometimes cannot demonstrate it or ride myself at that level. I experience this a lot with our college programs. They want to improve at park and pipe and while I am freestyle certifed, I am not yet good enough at park to go as big as the people I am teaching. It still works though because I just do what they should do only on a smaller scale.

The secret to instructing is patience and good communication skills. Being a good listerner is surprisingly crucial too. Too many instructors talk and talk and talk, yet do`nt listen to what the student is saying about where their head is at.

And thanks so much for all the positive feedback...it means a lot to me!

I try to avoid that maneuver!

Hey, watched the video and nice job, glad you posted that on here! I like the "pet the dag" example and will try that myself as boardslides still wig me out and I alway fall on my ass on the rail when I do fall... Great video and I like the interaction going on!
