My guess is that it happens because one (or all) of your shoulders, hips, or head was not on the same plane as the rail. If your in a 50/50, you need to have all of the above "aiming" in the same parallel directions. If your board is 50/50, but your UPPER BODY is turn more towards one side, then you lower body will follow along with it, taking you into a boardslide. Also, a way of avoiding the edge catch is lean back just a touch. If you lean back to far, you'll slide out on the dismount (if not on the rail itself).
