Question to instructors - female specific methods?
I have a question. Are there/ Do you have female specific snowboard instructing methods? I am interseted to know and would be great if answers comes from different schools/ countries.
Do you see the difference of lower body / upper body initiated turn
- as a general difference in male and female ?
- or part of instruction , beginner and intermediate progression?
My Italian (Tirolian) instructor whom I learnt from as a beginner, had explained to me as a Nth. American style when using upper body strength (swinging action).
He explained European style being focused more on the lower body, shoulders just point to where you are going.
Well the national standard in both Canada and United States CASI and AASI both preach lowerbody movements complimented by upper body alignment and movements. Your Italian instructor might have had a language barrier that created this misrepresentation. We do focus on some differences in women and men. Your Q angle, ATP (can also happen in men but more common in women), different center of balance, etc. The general movements and alignments of snowboarding stay the same; it is understanding how the above effect the range of motion that is available and the movement options that one might have to use. In fact there are clinic topics in most of the divisions of AASI specifically to deal with differences in women for instructors. Not only this but many mountains have begun giving women specific lessons, clinics, and camps to better meet their needs.
