Default New Mountain Board

Ok, not really wake boarding, but I did finally break down and pick up a new Mountain board. I have the kite but am just not that big a fan of water so just have`nt got the motivation to go to Hood River and try the kite boarding. With gas prices, I wanted something I could do the kite boarding thing right here in the city parks, not to mention use the board on the logging roads in the hills around here. I am heading to the coast here in a couple of weeks where we fly the kites and this thing will be great on the packed sand. A good place to get the hang of this. Once I get this figured out, I am going to pack the kite with me up to Timberline and try it with the snowboard. This board also has the brakes but for kiting, I have them uninstalled.

This is the board I bought; it is the Core 95 model.

vely niiice. 8)

i've got a core 16 myself.

what kite(s) are you flying?

snowkiting is easier than riding these! especially on shallllow snow over a frozen lake. deep snow is much more difficult & a lot more comparable to being on the water vs. land.

Right now, I have a Slingshot 3M trainer. I am still learning to fly it and the most difficult thing is getting it back in the air after a crash without setting it up all over again. Still learning to manage the power winder correctly etc. This kite is enough for me on the coast with the stiff breeze and it will pull me on the mountain board, but not too fast as I want to learn this gradually.

What about the mountain board did you find more difficult than the snowboard? Any tips/experiences would be appreciated.

Nice board snow, I hope you like it. It really saddens me that the winds die out here in the summer and it's not even worth it to go out and buy a kite. But on the other hand I still have the cable park to play in the water. To be honest I love water, so this wake boarding gig is working just fine for me.

So this board only works with a kite? or I guess you could also use it in downhill....

All I have is a Core 90, as far as kites go I have a 3m Best trainer and a 05 Best Yarga 15m, but I need to replace the bar and lines, then I need to proceed to learn to ride up wind.

But way to go Sno, welcome to the kite brigade

higher center of gravity, no metal edge to cut into the ground to hold a tight line. also, sliding straight down wind on a snowboard = shaving some ice & snow like a regular downhill stop... making the same move on a mountain board = much more likely to catch the edge of the wheels and ending up getting pulled onto your knees for a bit of a slide. (wear old jeans!) although, 4 wheel slides to scrub off speed are entirely do-able, even for a novice like myself, so long as the surface you're on cooperates and you can get the coordination down.

tips: practice practice practice!

w/ a small (3m) kite in a good breeze you can learn a LOT about kite control and angles of attack to have your board travel on in order not to head straight down wind and cause line slack, or to tack back & forth to come up wind - and also to pilot the kite to generate as much power via apparent wind as possible vs. just hooking in & cruising on a virtually stationary big kite that you don't have to work very much at all.

like on water, keep your back leg bent a fait bit more than the front, lean back, fly the kite low & use the power to counter balance your weight & get you going!

you can certainly use it downhill - that's what their original intended purpose is - but many use them for kiteboarding because they are relatively inexpensive and a lot more versatile than a kite specific model (which are more crescent moon shaped to favour the heelside edge & minimize mass for jumping.). ie:
