I am going to start my 10 hour drive from the prairies -> Banff for Sunshine opener and some Lake Louise early season riding.
No idea where I am staying etc.. just winging it really..
PM if anyone wants to shred! See ya there!
I'm going up to sunshine tomorrow morning early doors for first chair - not expecting much but it looks like it's going to be snowing all day and night today so could be in for some sick pow in the trees on strawberry for all 100 metres of it :dunno:
That'll make three weeks at the local hills, first week at Nakiska, which was pretty fun to be honest (completely different story to what I heard from last week)..
Louise last week, which was sweet up until lunchtime where the lift lines ballooned out of control and wiwaxy glazed over.
What's the easiest way to get up to Sunshine from Calgary? Gonna be in Calgary in early December, hoping to make it up to Sunshine on Dec 6/7. accomodation on mountain looks expensive - think I'll be staying in Calgary
Inns of Banff, Spruce Grove, and Banff International Hotel should all be under $100 a night. Cheapest way to get here is the Greyhound. Not reliable though. From all three of those hotels there are shuttles directly to the resorts.
Stay in Canmore, probably the same price as Calgary. Check hotels.ca, I can usually find a room for under $100, I've gotten 2bdr condos that sleep 6 with a kitchenette for $120/night. Rent a car, it's not much for a few days.
Was at Sunshine today with a couple buddies. Lots of pow and a great all around day. They open Wawa tomorrow. I am going back tomorrow as long as the roads are not deadly. I am an insurance adjuster, so I tend to be a bit of a wussy when it comes to icy roads.
I rode Sunshine yesterday and Louise today.
Sunshine opening day only had three short lifts running but the snow was pretty damn good and some decent ridable terrain. As someone said earlier, I was also able to find nice snow right till the last run.
Louise was really good for cruising early in the morning.. but considering there was only the one main run off the gondola & a krillion people, it didn't take long for snow to be scraped away by all the skid-boards and ski-plows making some nasty ice patches in some spots.
That all said, I will be at sunshine tomorrow based on my previous two days
If you are going for Louise tomorrow, my advice is get there early for good parking and fresh groom before it gets decimated.
Thanks for the heads up bcasey. Let me know what tomorrow is like at Sunshine. I plan on going to LL on Monday for a change of scenery. If anybody has Monday off, it would be nice to have somebody to meet up with.
What all is open at Sunshine? If the numbers are right they have a way better base and a lot more runs already. Are they doing discounted passes right now like Louise?
For limited lifts and runs, yesterday at Sunshine was pretty awesome! Lots of powder all day if you you were willing to look for it. Just like everyone else has said, it's good early in the morning and then around noon it starts getting pretty packed and then by 3 or so it started clearing out a little. Definitely a great first day out for the year!
Sunshine was a lot of fun on saturday - nice stashes of powder off wawa. Had a great first day up there considering 3/4 of the mtn was still closed - I'm heading back up next weekend for SSV and LL sat/sun.
Anyone hear if Fernie is opening early? Kicking horse is getting dumped on too - apparently 35cm in 48hr with 25cm still to come. Surely December 13th is way out there?

There is some stupid tour group called...."bust loose" i think, saw a poster on UofC campus today offering a weekend snowboard trip to Kicking Horse, and the dates are the 6-8 of Dec....not sure if that means they will be open early, the tour gets the weekend to themselves, or this company is full of poo....i will call them tomorrow and see.
I posted a short video from my trip.
Sorry for the poor footage, I was more focused on riding than filming. :dunno:
The video does not do the conditions justice at all.
