Default How did you get out west

Just out of curiosity, how did ya'll end up out west? I'm sure a lot of you grew up in Vanc/Calgary but I'm sure some of you moved from out east.

My hearts always been set on getting out west one day.. lost both my jobs and have nothing holding me back right now out east. I've been applying to jobs out west but only landed two skype interviews so far.

Anyway, not necessarily looking for any advice, just wanted to gather some motivational stories if possible

when i was 20 or so i flew to portland with my board, a lil backpack and around $300..never starved, had many adventures and haven't lived east of MT since, thats 25yrs this summer. if you see a window of opportunity you just gotta do it. i wouldn't worry too much about having jobs, connections, etc. therein lies the adventure, you'll be fine. leap, and the net will appear

I applied for an advertised position, got it, then took a flight. What sort of work are you looking for?

I've worked the last 3 years as a Quality Assurance Analyst and 2.5 years before that I was a customer support manager...

Pretty much anything decent though that will pay the bills

My only issue is I'm 24, soon to be 25... have a car lease and student loans to take care of.

I'm getting real close to saying fuck it and driving to Calgary. Found a spot to stay at for $400 a month

You're 25 with very few obligations. Do it. I have buddies from college who have chased the dollar and doing very well for themselves financially. Other buddies who like me have struck a balance between doing what they love and chasing the dollar. But, not sure any of us are any happier than my buddies still "stuck" out in Tahoe ski bumming it up.

25 yrs ago, wife, 3 year old, student loan...flew out on 2 wk vac stayed with friends, got a shitty job, back home, packed up a beat up old van with wife and kid, landed in a 1 room cabin with only cold h20 for 6 weeks. Its a matter of doing it and persistence.

I've been out west my whole life but was stuck in Omaha and Chicago for a long time before moving out here. Got to the point where I told my wife I would not live out there any more. She still acts like there are places in the midwest worth moving back to - LOL. Pretty much here to stay, will go small town if the dollar allows.

Good thread! I'm hoping to read some more "Go West!" stories myself. Depending on the length of my post op recovery, It's possible I could be looking for work in a couple months myself. Should that happen,... I really don't see staying in MI if Im starting all over again.

OP has the advantage of youth goin' for him. It's certainly harder to contemplate, rationalize a move like that at 50+! But it's certainly something I consider an option. No,.. More like a possible "Opportunity!"
