Well, I certainly don't see an active thread... And since I moved away from Vancouver, I can't let them have all the fun... So let's get the party started!
Pano today!
... And I just spelled Kootenays wrong... Stupid phone.
Ended up driving through parkers, looks sweet. I saw some tracks up there
Not sure it would be worth the 3 hour drive from radium for me, when I've got the goods in the back yard I'm up north for the next 2 weeks... Can't wait to see how things have shaped up when I get back!
If you weren't planning on hitting KH opening, or were going to do revy instead: rethink everything.
Sweet Googly moogly is the snow good. And fucking deep. I was bootpacking at pano today, and I was sinking past my waist, and wasn't close to touching bottom, and I'll be damned if it snow wasn't some of the best I've ever ridden.
Couple of pics from opening day at Revelstoke - and it was glorious. Pretty heavy inversion meant cold and cloudy in the valley and sunny and mild up high.
Yay, very much so. Taynton is going to be off the hook... We've left it completely untouched for you guys. Super soft snow up high. Gets a little heavy at the bottom. The new glading really opened it up. There has been a couples cents of fresh, and a lot of wind depositing over the last couple days, so anything north/northeast is getting loaded quite well.
Avoid the "zone", as we have ripped the shit out of it. Founders would be good for a few laps as well.
Anything south/west facing has a bit of a nasty sun crust on it, so keep that in mind.
Better half has some races at Pano.....19th to 22nd (I think)
So I shall be there as well!
Last time I was there the mountain wasn't open to non racers....so I just had the pleasure of being the chauffeur for the week as we stayed in Invermere. Maybe we'll try to stay in the resort this time.
Storm Mountain / Stanley Glacier somewhere's up that valley. I was shooting for the fire break but lost track of it from the Hwy and didn't see it again till I was driving home. I was up the valley part way to the glacier. Some chutes had tracks, I went over one more that wasn't ridden yet. Snow was sticky, and the split I rented had no float, submarined the whole run and was a real turd to turn. G3 blacksheep carbon 160 something. Felt like the skins were still on coming down, didn't want to slide very well. Here's a post from a couple of years ago that kinda sums my trip, but for me, the ski out was actually more fun then my one terrible run. Still had fun though....
Me and a couple friends are driving from Vancouver to Kicking Horse/Revy/Whitewater/Red Mountain from Dec 25 to Jan 04.
Never done this before and none of us has ever driven along the powder highway nor been to any of these mountains. I'm the driver and am a bit concerned with the road conditions.
I drive a Mazda 3 with winter tires. Does anyone know whether if a small hatchback is good enough to drive around near that area?

I live just south of KH and drive the same car. No issues. There is actually no snow on the ground here right now, lots in the mountains though. Deep snow won't likely hinder your travels, just ice - especially if you're driving the kootenay pass. Take er easy and you'll be fine.
That being said, if you're going to be at KH, let me know and I can meet you up there. I haven't ridden there before, so I'll be a shitty guide, but it's always good to go out for a rip.
Stoked to hear this about Rossland area....heading to Big Red Cats/Red/WH2O on the 27 for 4 days. Any Red locals with chair recommendations for the steeps? Been to Whitewater before so I kinda know the drill there...
