2012/13 first timer...advice please!

My girlfriend and I are quiting jobs as geologists and travelling the world which obviously includes a Canadian ski season. Both of us have done Californian seasons and loved it and just went to Niseko for a month and loved that more.
Keen to go somewhere with sick terrain and decent park where the town isnt crazy huge...somewhere you get to know heaps of people, and live in a shithole with 20 other people cause thats what its all about!
Thinking Banff, but bus sounds average and town pretty big, had friends go to Fernie and love it but no park. Whistler...dont really want to join the masses.

Any thoughts?

I can't think of one place that does it all.

Parks in Western Canada are a joke if you have been to the US. I have not been to all the hills in BC but none have a park that is good as the ones they had in Keystone/Breck when I worked there 10 years ago!

I'm thinking you either want to be in Revi or Nelson if the town is important. Cool towns, good hills and a bit more "local" than say Banff or Whistler.

Seems to rain a bit in Fernie as well. Plus they close terrain alot due to inbound avi risk.

I would not call the town in Banff big. The bus is a pain but if you are coming for a season get a car. No matter where you want to be if you don't have a car you will find it hard to travel to the other resorts. With a car from Banff you can go to the following places for a day or a weekend.

Kicking Horse
Marmot Basin

Plus the season in Banff is from November to the end of May.

Hope that helps?

Thanks hard to decide where to go. Banff sounds cool but doesnt have the same terrain as say Revi? Does Rev have any park? Have you ridden Big White, if so whats the town that services it like?

no park at revy

banff has 4 resorts very close, revy is pretty unique with top to bottom tree runs but banff might be a better choice. you could always make canmore home if you have a car.

Whats the town vibe at Big White like?

Justin 03-13-2012 08:18 PM

sorry i can't help with that, i have only been there once and it was my first time and at night lol.

you are close to kelowna (45 min i think?). i don't personally like it there, feels like a big city but is really just a town. i have some friends that live there so i do go to kelowna sometimes. lots of ppl like it there in the summer, hot with a nice lake.

Not sure how the park setups are, but if I was gonna bum it, Telluride, Crested Butte, and Jackson would probably be my top 3.

Deff keen to bum it but keen to bum it in Canada not the states.
Banff sounds sick like a mini Whistler? Does anyone know what the town vibe is like at Big White or at Rossiland that services Red mountain?
