Might as well start dreaming early.

It's June 23rd and this summer is shit. Let's skip this wimpy summer and give us back the winter.

Booya!

Hi everyone. I'm currently living in Whistler and have been here two months but am considering moving to Van for a better paying job. I know it's slow season but I'm not loving being here, least of all having to housekeep because there's nothing else around.
I've tried googling but can't really come up with a single reply or advice on getting to Mt Baker. My friend suggested I board there weekends and live in Van instead of living in Whistler but I was told by someone else that it's like a 5 hour drive so I don't know what crazy talk my friend is speaking. Anyone have any idea on boarding Baker on weekends? Hard to do? Would I need a car? Or should I stay put and suck it up in Whistler. I'm a newb to snowboarding - been twice for a week at a time but sucked SO SO SO bad.

lol thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. i know what you are saying about whistler though. vancouver is way better than whistler, theres only 1 type of crowd in whistler, and not much to do other than board or mtn bike. baker is about 3-4 hours away from vancouver i think. and you definitely would need a car. if you move to vancouver you got cypress, grouse and seymour. and way more shit to do during the day/night in the city.

The thing is once I make the decision to leave, that's it. No chance to move back here again until next season. I live in Blueberry and have my own room but I'm in Van on every day off. Winter WILL get better right? I won't be bitter at having to housekeep when there's boarding to be done, right? And I WILL get better fairly quickly if I keep at it... right?!? :(

I just need to know that if I DID move to Van, the $1300 worth of equipment and clothes would be used regularly because good mountains aren't far away.

3hours is doable for a weekend. but I'm an Aussie female and driving isn't doable.

Ok, so Whistler is about 1.5hrs from Van, and Baker is about 1.5hrs from Van too... but there is a border crossing (obviously)... and you'll need a car to get to Baker. No bus.

If you are learning you don't need Baker... or Whis for that matter. You could be living in Van, and up at Cypress, Grouse or Seymour getting some hours in and gaining some confidence. All the local hills are under 3/4hr away from downtown (car). Public transit goes to Grouse (easiest), $20 (i think) bus to cypress return, public transit to bottom of Seymour then $6 one way shuttle or hitchhike up... more like an hour to 1.5hr kinda ting.

I dunno, whis will prob be fun when winter kicks in but if you like the city then move down. More variety of jobs I guess.

You sound homesick

Got a newsletter from Seymour the other day. It looks like they're really going to get serious about park coverage this year. Pretty stoked, reading this.

This is from the newsletter:

BIG PLANS AND BIGGER AIR - TERRAIN PARK PLANS

Young Guns - XL jump line of 3 tables and the jib line down through the old half pipe. This park will feature many of our large contests. Features will range from L to XL.

Mushroom - More features than ever before. We will be using the old Mushroom zone as well as the new zone from last year. Mushroom will have more features in a row for beginners to progress on. Features will range from S to M.

The Pit - Street style setup. Features will range from M to XL.

Northlands - A top to bottom park run on the new Mystery Peak Express. This park will run through Nut House and then down into Northlands and then into the Pit.

We have some new zones in Nut House, featuring large natural type hits and the landings will be amazing on powder days. The Nut House will have a natural feel with groomed take offs and powder landings. The rest of Northlands park will have jumps and jibs from M to XL.

'Course I'll be concentrating on the S and M features, being neither very good nor suicidal. :)

It should @ least be super smooth if nobody has been on it.

I'm pretty sure they don't want people going up there though.

So if your game, lets do it:thumbsup:

This is good to hear as they needed to step up their beginner obstacles to allow progression for the new to park riders...

This was not the case until last year when they put in the magic carpet, took out the rope tow and subsequently removed mushroom park to prevent the park riders from using the carpet. Previous to last year Mushroom had always been a great set up for beginners and comps. ( maybe they were actually reading my wtf? emails). Anyways it is great to hear they are rethinking the park for beginners and good news they are also moving Young Guns park down the old half pipe as this area of the mountain was not being utilized very effectively. New zones in nut house?? Sweet!! As a long time seasons pass holder I am excited about these positive changes!

Yeah, I got the impresssion the park rats were acting like a biker gang, cutting into line, terrorizing the newbs  . Honestly, I thought the line going into Chuck's last season was a better beginner setup than they'd had in previous years. It really looks like it's going to be a great season this year - if we ever get some that that, you know, the white stuff we slide on? Been so long since I've seen any...

I went hiking up Seymour today. there's about 8" of snow at parking lot level -- although it was drizzling so the stuff was spongecake. You could hike it and get some runs in. There were actually some boarders and skiers doing just that. Just have to go uphill from the parking lot.

Well, who is all going up to Cypress for opening day?

I'm pretty sure I'll be there.

If any of you guys are planning to hit it up, we should all get together.

I'm part of a Vancouver snowboard group created on Facefuckbook.
There will be lots of them there as well, it grows every day. It's got more than 100 peeps @ the moment. Here's one of our members....
Mwa ha ha...

The group of guys I slalom longboard with will all be up there too. They will all most likely be hard bootin', but if you see one say hi, they're cool.
If you think your slick ask one of them for a race, you'll get your ass handed to you.

I'll be the loud guy @ the front of the line, rallying the troops to get that air bag free.

I think im a fair weather boarder, because the more I think about hiking to get to crappy snow, and waiting in lines opening day/week for crap snow the mroe I say fook that. Ill get a couple extra leg workouts in at the gym and start when the conditions are good and the initial buzz is gone.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks to cool temperatures, impressive snow making and new snow Whistler Mountain will open early on Saturday, November 17 at 8:30am. Guests will have the option to upload from either the base of Whistler Village Gondola or the Creekside Gondola to access 1800 vertical feet of skiing and riding via Emerald Express, Big Red Express and the Franz Chair. Blackcomb Mountain will open, as scheduled, Thursday, November 22.

Of course my friend, I'll pm ya my #

I have a pass to to Cypress this year. Awww yaaah:D:D.

You're more than welcome to come any time & I hope to get in 100 days.

I had Cypress corporate discounts goin' on, sweet prices, like $240 less than the early bird. Only something like $450:eek: for a Silver.
I posted them up for everyone....But I have a feeling you mighta missed that? :(
Cause I'm assuming you would have said thanks?:dunno:

Hopefully you're just not that polite of a guy:laugh:, & ya grabbed one.
If not, I think I'll be doing corporate thing again next year too.

I've already been up 2wice, but it's very limited with only one run for everybody. Apparently they got 20 cm last night & it might have snowed all day?

I say might because they updated the snow report starting @ 6 this morning, then every hour.
Each time saying that it was snowing, but the stats never changed.

@ the end of a whole day snowing, the numbers are the same.
Only shuffled around & worded differently:confused:
& since they took out all the web cams, I guess we'll just have to trust them.

Oh well, nothing I can do except rip it up.:cheeky4:

Heres a very very very quick video of Whistler opening day. Was so damn wet when we were riding and sooooooo damn windy, mates who went up at like 1pm said it was still windy but reasonably dry. Footage is pretty average quality, was also first time riding with a GoPro on a pole, wow it really throws you off balance will be something I need to get used to haha ended up giving up filming anything cause I wasn't able to butter or try and play around with the pole hence why the footage is only like 50seconds lol

Not sure how to embed yet so heres a link haha

Hahaha yeah I only filmed half a run, I wasn't able to butter around with the pole I'm not used to it yet lol

The conditions on Whistler were a lot nicer today, was up top by 9am and there were about 15 people on the hill haha Had about 5 really nice runs given the conditions, there was about 22cm last night and its still dumping, Roundhouse was -6 so the snow falling was pretty decent :) Whacked the GoPro on the helmet today to muck around, will do some experimenting and see what I can come up with in a few weeks haha
