Might as well start dreaming early.

It's June 23rd and this summer is shit. Let's skip this wimpy summer and give us back the winter.

Booya!

yea...both are freestyle oriented for sure...what I didn't mention was that I'm only 130lbs...so my weight makes free riding on both of these boards (so im told) very doable. I took the westie out to Stowe VT and it was pretty decent...though I found myself a bit more tired after long groomer runs b/c of the lack of camber (still held an edge very well)...but im very curious how the full centre reverse makes out in some powder.

If anyone signed up for the Sportchek team assist thing, one of the coupons is 20% off, even on already marked down prices.

So if it's 50% off, that little coupon makes it 70% off.

It might be worth it to stop by there 2morra?

Copped a new pair of Burton Ambush in a 13 today to replace the ancient size 14 Rulers I picked up just to get rolling. Big improvement in fit and comfort, but not quite as quick responsive feeling. Went out to Hemlock for the first time, got a free pass when I got there...

Was in a hurry and didn't bother adjusting my bindings to compensate. Found this on my way back to the car:

These are an old set of Burton Custom Brew I picked up in a package deal with my board. Might be able to get a non-matching replacement, but should I start shopping for a new pair or just pick up the pair of year old barely used Custom I saw on Craigslist for $80? Just so I can ride in the meantime and possibly have a backup for the long term...

How did you get a free pass to Hemlock?:dunno:

I like free passes to Hemlock:D

By anyone's opinion, which of the GVRD board shops have the best boot fitters? And by boot fitter I don't mean a person who just gives me some random boot in the size i ask for, I can go to Sportchek for that.

I'm planning on hitting the W4th shops today, maybe Coastal Riders if people recommend them... I can travel to North Van too, but only as a last resort...

My experience at most of the local shops hasn't been the greatest. Their employees are pretty much what you would expect from young people working at a board shop - laaaiid back somewhat aloof B R O S that aren't the most articulate or professional in customer service. That said, they're generally quite friendly and on the ball when it comes to making sure you get some help at least so I won't hold too much against them. On one hand they can't always make reccomendations based on what they like since so much can be so subjective, but I digress...

When I went looking for boots in a 13 most of the W4th shops pretty much laughed and said "good luck" as they only really carried one or two pairs at most in my size. I'm not sure that the fact that it came from a cute girl who looked a lot like another girl I used to know helped or not, but yeah... I was in Coastal Riders a couple weeks ago on unrelated bidniz and ended up glancing at boots and chatting with one of the dudes there who was pretty helpful. Went in on boxing day and it was a zoo. They had less in my size than the dude had said the week prior but I tried on the couple pairs they had (one of which was one of the ones I was after) anyway and went with the Ambush (20% off too!) as it was a real solid fit. They haven't really fully packed out yet but I can tell they'll only need minor tweaking if any. After a couple hard days of riding they feel great.

There's some great threads in the boots forum on here if you look. They'll tell you what you should be looking for and how a good fit should feel, along with what you can do to improve the fit of what you have/get. As a newer rider but a very quick learner, I found them really helpful.

Hopefully you made out well today!

I'm about to drive to Squamish to buy a pair of deadly boots for super cheap, Ride RFL's for $100 bucks. This guy has lots of gear for stupid cheap, search 604-849-4264 on craigslist for some of the stuff. I've bought gear off him already once before & he has way more gear he hasn't taken pics of.

If you see something you like, & we buy it together, we can probably swing a deal with him. I did last time.

I bought a Ride Slackcountry with Ride EX bindings & 2013 Ride El Hefe bindings for the grand total of $250!!!! If that gives you any idea of the kinds of deal you're gonna get here.
Slackcountry $750
Ride EX bindings $230
$2013 Ride El Hefe's $400

I paid $250!!! If you got a few bucks in your pocket, This is your golden opportunity to score some retarded prices. Last time I was there he had like 20 boards 10 pairs of boots & bindings.

Smorgasbord!!!

Brand New Burton Imperial Boots, size 19, Black, 2013 It's a size 10
Brand New Ride Snowboard, Blauvelt 161cm
Brand New 2013 Ride Capo Bindings Size L Black

If anybody sees something they like, I can grab it for you.
Dohnuts? you're close to me I believe.

Good lookin' out!

Too bad I already grabbed a pair'o'deez yesterday at 15% off retail:

Shredded Cypress last night with 'em until close.

Let me know if he's got any nice Lib or Gnu stuff. I'm a bigger guy (6'3" 215~ lbs depending on the day...) and ride a 162w currently but could possibly go a little smaller for the right package.

#358 ·
Ouch, that still probably cost you close to $200? Didn't it?

I would take em back if I could & buy 2 sets of Ride Capo's for $200.
Well $100 a piece is what he's got them on Craigs for, but if you wanna come with me you could probably get them both for $150.

I bought the Slack for $150

Then asked if he would drop the El Hefe's from $150 to $100 & he did.

Your in Langley I could pick you up in 15 min

Hey, no worries man... next time! I'm down to make friends since I've yet to make any riding partners and I still go alone.

I'm actually really happy with them. I wanted them the first time I saw 'em and my research said they're just right for me. Kinda wanted the silver with the orange accents but the green (my fave colour!) goes sweet with the board! But $200? hah... not quite. :giggle: The MSRP on those is $299 but they were 15% off whatever they normally go for at Coastal. $283 all told after tax. Money I didn't plan on spending but hey, it's only a drop in the savings account...

Still, smokin' deals there dude!

Now I just gotta finish working on the Benz tomorrow morning so I can get my ass back up on the mountain... *grovel grovel*

Ah, I wish he had a mid-150s all mountain board. I'd love to grab one with a set of those bindings. My gear is terrible but I'm too poor and don't get up the mountain enough to drop a ton of money on new stuff. I could just get the bindings but then I'd need a new board too because my current piece of junk isn't worthy of touching those.

Blackcomb was a shit show yesterday, lineups up the ass, and snow was tracked out everywhere. We had to hike and head out as far as skiers left we possibly could to find any snow, but once we did, it was amazing. Almost untouched tree powder that led us right to 7th heaven.

#375 ·
I do, and that's a great price. Keep in mind that the Contours have a real problem with the built-in mikes so don't expect to get sound from it. Also contact this guy Launch Helmet Cams Vancouver Canada (he's in North Vancouver) and see if he can match the price. Probably not, but he has all the accessories in stock as well and is pretty helpful.

First time up to Cypress last night. Very impressed with the place in general as well as the quality of snow given the lack of fresh over the past while. Given the small size, it's a pretty cool resort, very easy to get around with some nice open runs with good pitch where you can really open up some nice carves. Not to mention the amazing view on a clear night!

I've never been truly big mountain riding somewhere like Whistler and that, but I gotta shake my head when I hear folks from places like Calgary say "yeah, but these aren't like REAL mountains..."

Really? What hills do you have 15 minutes from downtown that you can shred any day or night of the week, even after working all day? Nevermind that view, yeah. We're spoiled here and we usually know it but sometimes forget.

I'm taking vacation from Jan 14 to 25th (not approved yet, but shouldn't be a problem) and will be up riding pretty much every day. Which day you planning on going up to Seymour?

I get the impression from what I've heard about Baker that you have a better chance of getting good snow there. Whistler, even during the week, can be busy, and they can have streaks of bad weather. OTOH, when you hit it right (as I did March last year) it's awesome. I don't think the lack of high-speed lifts on Baker is going to be an issue coz it sounds like there's rarely a lift line. I'd go to Baker, but then I've already been to Whistler. That's the best I can do for help.

Hey thanks for the invite! Friday the 25th is when I'll be at Mt Seymour (my company is involved with the concrete toboggan race and the race day is Friday, should be a good day!)...

I'm also going to have some free time the evening of the 24th, and probably the day or the 26th but I'll have to play that by ear.

My duties will be done on the 26th, so I'm thinking of heading to one of the mountains the morning of the 27th (GF will fly in on the 26th) and then head back to Calgary either the 29th or 30th. :dizzy:

That's cool man. You'll get to see first hand what us retards down in Vancity get to ride. Cypress is good (for a local). I'm sure you'll have fun at Seymour, esp if you get to linkup with Donutz and/or us for a 'special' tour lol.
Awesome! Yeah I'd really appreciate a local 'guide' lol... I need to find some rocks to fall off of!

If there is new snow for sure hit baker!! I went yesterday and although it was an amazing bluebird day it was very tracked and even the grooming was soso. No terrain park either for non pow days. I get the impression they rely on pow for good riding there cause otherwise boring.

As for lines we did not wait once for a chair and would say they felt just as fast as seymours new high speed quad only not detachable so loading was "quick". All the chairs there are quads as well.

Big White is amazing. First time here, and I'm impressed with the runs, friendliness of the staff and the shredability factor of the mountain. Wide open runs, where you can try "carving" big wide turns. Lots of spaced out trees, and mellow moguls that a actually fun to ride.

Love it.

#388 ·
haha ya Iam sure I was there, at least thats what my pass said:dunno:. even in the trees the snow was real choppy and crusty. Maybe just a bad day to go? I am a regular at seymour and think where I was riding at baker anyway was no better than Seymour for hits if not worse.Again not slamming Baker I would love to go there with fresh snow or at least soon after.

#393 ·
Seems like Baker is getting a bit of a rough time on here.

I'm planning on doing a day trip tomorrow, forecast looks decent but visibility will most likely be poor. Hope the fresh covers up the crusty tracked out stuff that ragtop had on Thursday.

Anybody have any good tips on where to head to get away from the crowds??Would love to be able to put up a much more favourable report after our trip. PMs very welcome if the real insider info isn't for public consumption. :)

Cheers,

Hey Vancouverites...your guidance is needed! Looking into trying to put together a trip to Whistler in late March...just have a couple of questions for the locals...

1) outside of renting a car...are there any ways to get to Whistler from Vancouver? Are there like daily buses or shuttles? Whats the most cost efficient way to get up there?

2) Anywhere to get somewhat discounted tickets? Best place i found was:
Whistler/Blackcomb Lift Tickets & Seasons Passes - Capilano Students' Union

3) I was on the Whistler site to try and quote a stay and ski package and it didnt seem like they provided any disc on the lift tickets if you stayed at Whistler...is it only for certain lodges and if you book a min # of nights?

Your help and advice is greatly appreciated :)

The best value shuttle service I've found is epicrides.ca. 35$ day return from Vancouver which is good value but they can't offer one way afaik. Greyhound or snowbus.com are your other options. Other than that, you can be lucky with a ride share using craigslist or the "UBC Whistler Ride Share via Ski and Board Club" facebook group. Patience and persistence is required though.
