WOW, planning a trip to Calgary to see one of my best friends who's moved there from shitty Toronto. Was going to ask if a Dec 1st trip would allow me to get some riding in...but I guess this answers the question?
Louise makes snow and opens on the 10th of Nov i think.
Sunshine is usually open with decent snow by then, you should be OK then but later in dec is better and really feb-april are the best in alberta i think.
Ya i grew up in the London area, so needless to say i didn't learn to ride until i moved away from there. Alberta/bc is pretty amazing for snowboarding.
I think i skied 5 times before i moved away. Last time i was rode back in London i told my cousine that i didn't understand how a person can get good at boler MOUNTAIN lol, i think i came off as kind of a dick.
Nah I totally feel you, It takes some serious commitment to become good here. Let's take Horseshoe Valley for examble... longest run lasts 45 seconds! It's crazy
Mainly snowboarded Horseshoe in the past.... which is why I wont be pming any of you that are offering to ride with me in Banff until at least the 2nd/3rd day I'm there because it'll be embarrassing haha
Pretty sickening compared to what you guys get to ride
I made the move out here from same place as you. What are you waitin for. The west is where it is at, I can't explain how fun it is to live in the mountains. Snowboarding biking hiking fishing hunting climbing camping 4 wheeling
Best decision I've ever made, I did it for snowboarding I needed to be close
To the mountains cause I feel that snowboarding is me and I can't live In a
Place and only think about it. I had to move and just do it

Funny thing is one of my best friends just moved out there. She just finished school and found a good job in Calgary. Me on the other hand, dropped out of University...got a pretty good paying job and moved up in the company I work for... But its time for a change I'm only 23 and want to go to college for computer programming, I'm considering going to school in Calgary for Programming but feel it'll be real tough not having anyone to lean on paying for my car/insurance/rent/tuition ext....
But I want to move west pretty bad, Pretty much hate going to clubs these days... Spent my summer mountain biking and fishing just like you described
Wouldn't say I LOVE Nakiska, but it's excellent for a hill 1:10 from my house! It's actually pretty good overall, obviously nothing compared to the big resorts here.
Yeah I was an Nakiska opening day, and then again on Sunday. Did you see a guy with a white/grey maple leaf camo jacket and yellow pants trying to be a hooligan?
I think there will be a few of us there on Friday!
Enjoy 1,450ft(442m) of vertical from Glacier chairlift, with Bald Eagle, Wiwaxy and Easy Street open.Tickets are 50% off regular season rates. Click here for details. Louise Plus Card holders: remember, your 1st, 4th and 7th days are free. But, until more mountain opens up, you can choose to save your 1st free day; show your Louise Plus Card at guest services and receive an additional $5 off the discounted ticket rate.
Yeah, top of the world is probably my favourite chair there (along with the platter)...
Where did sunshine post that ticket price of 50% off?
On this page they mention opening day tickets are $69.95 which is out to lunch. If it was $41.50 for the day I'd probably go to Sunshine instead, otherwise forget it. I'm tempted to go to Nakiska instead and wait until more of Lake Louise opens up!
Nakiska is only going to have the olympic chair open to the public until 1:30 though tomorrow (racer training on the gold until then) so unfortunately it'll all be tracked out...
Probably best to call SSV tomorrow. They said the price will change depending on how many runs they can open in the morning. $69.95 is outrageous since the sunshine/marmot card and the costco packs are both cheaper.
I don't know about the platter man... that's a long ass ride with snowboard. Couple times a day is my limit on it. I think they use it to keep relatively new people off of the sketchier terrains.

Think I made an executive decision to just do Nakiska instead unless LL opens up a whole lot more terrain. If I'm doing the one run races I'd rather only drive one hour from home! Too bad I was hoping to hit some of the stuff off the top of the world.
Yeah the platter is a leg, thigh killer for sure. It seems like it goes up a solid 30 degree slope the whole time! The best part is exactly what you said, too many people are scared to ride it so the snow up there is the best (and of course the terrain too. Last year in May I took the platter up, and then hiked up the ridge leading NW from the top, then plunged down into those chutes on the back. Great way to send off the season!
Wonder if you can ride it with the arm behind your ass. My friend showed me how to do it on the T-Bar but I suck at it. Maybe I'll go mid week when no one is there and test it out.
The arm sort of curves right before the platter, and I hold it down a little lower so it doesn't do the ball squisher. The only issue for me is it pushes right on the muscle and sort of hurts, I just shift positions a bit and try to use more arm strength to hold the pressure off my leg.
I haven't taken it more than 3 times in a day, not sure what it's like doing a whole day on the platter!
And my current hatred of Lake Louise continues with the question....why the f#%k would a person drive 1.5hrs to ride a platter lift all day??... Because the rest of the hill is just rocks and ice and cat tracks.... Super lame. Seriously... A platter lift..... They have a new gondola and a 6 person chair.. But they still can't upgrade the summit platter...I'll spend my cash on some places that have snow.
That's why I usually spend most of my time on the top of the world, you can access decent off-piste stuff from it, as well as some groomers for my perpetual need to bomb. The platter just gets me up to the "ultimate steeps". Although in may when the rest of the hill was slush or ice, it was still powder up there.
Im out at louse right now. Not to many people and the runs are half decent. Just not much open tommorow will be crazy if this place fills up. But I think they might open top of the world
Nakiska was actually pretty good today! The gold chair was closed until 1:30 due to racer training, but there were very few people on the hill so we did some laps on the Olympic chair. They've got a little rail park at mid-mountain now and I kept doing some jumps in there on the way through.
Once the gold chair opened up I headed up for a few runs, low vis due to the snow making at the top, but the runs were in good shape. Headed into the glades and there was about 8" of fresh almost untouched (while last weekend it was starting to get tracked out).
My buddies are coming down from Edmonton this weekend before they head back to Toronto for the winter. Thinking about Nakiska again tomorrow and the LL Sunday if they open up more terrain, otherwise possibly SSV on sunday instead.
Lake opened the platter and top of the world today. Good times I hear. Word is that they might open back bowls later in the week. It will be awesome if they open it this early.
