WOW, planning a trip to Calgary to see one of my best friends who's moved there from shitty Toronto. Was going to ask if a Dec 1st trip would allow me to get some riding in...but I guess this answers the question?

Ya i grew up in the London area, so needless to say i didn't learn to ride until i moved away from there. Alberta/bc is pretty amazing for snowboarding.

I think i skied 5 times before i moved away. Last time i was rode back in London i told my cousine that i didn't understand how a person can get good at boler MOUNTAIN lol, i think i came off as kind of a dick.

Nah I totally feel you, It takes some serious commitment to become good here. Let's take Horseshoe Valley for examble... longest run lasts 45 seconds! It's crazy

Have you been to nakiska yet? i went for a few hours on sunday. I know you love it there.
Wouldn't say I LOVE Nakiska, but it's excellent for a hill 1:10 from my house! :D It's actually pretty good overall, obviously nothing compared to the big resorts here.

Yeah I was an Nakiska opening day, and then again on Sunday. Did you see a guy with a white/grey maple leaf camo jacket and yellow pants trying to be a hooligan? :D

I think there will be a few of us there on Friday!

Driving to Louise Friday morn and back again at night , wouldn't mind carpooling to save some gas, just a few bucks.

So if anyone is interested just hit me up, ive got a very reliable 4x4 but also wiling to jump in with Somone else I'f the offers there

Lmk. I can take 4 people and got a rack up top for boards

I got a company vehicle and got room for one more... Gotta clear it with the GF. WAIT WHAT? ITS MY TRUCK!!! lol

Probably going to try to head up for opening and then stay until the early afternoon (gotta get back to the airport by 6:00 at the latest...)

LMK, we're coming from Airdrie so I could meet near COP or possibly the Cochrane HWY 2 exit.

edit: I would correct your grammar the whole way though so not sure that's going to work out!!! :D

No worries. I'll check with them again in the afternoon and next morning. They promised more updates.

Might have to go to sunshine after all... I was hoping for top of the world to be open to do a some back bowling.

#36 ·
Yeah, top of the world is probably my favourite chair there (along with the platter)...

Where did sunshine post that ticket price of 50% off?

On this page they mention opening day tickets are $69.95 which is out to lunch. If it was $41.50 for the day I'd probably go to Sunshine instead, otherwise forget it. I'm tempted to go to Nakiska instead and wait until more of Lake Louise opens up!

Nakiska is only going to have the olympic chair open to the public until 1:30 though tomorrow (racer training on the gold until then) so unfortunately it'll all be tracked out... :(

Probably best to call SSV tomorrow. They said the price will change depending on how many runs they can open in the morning. $69.95 is outrageous since the sunshine/marmot card and the costco packs are both cheaper.

I don't know about the platter man... that's a long ass ride with snowboard. Couple times a day is my limit on it. I think they use it to keep relatively new people off of the sketchier terrains.

Think I made an executive decision to just do Nakiska instead unless LL opens up a whole lot more terrain. If I'm doing the one run races I'd rather only drive one hour from home! Too bad I was hoping to hit some of the stuff off the top of the world.

Yeah the platter is a leg, thigh killer for sure. It seems like it goes up a solid 30 degree slope the whole time! The best part is exactly what you said, too many people are scared to ride it so the snow up there is the best (and of course the terrain too. Last year in May I took the platter up, and then hiked up the ridge leading NW from the top, then plunged down into those chutes on the back. :D Great way to send off the season!

You've been riding for 2 weeks already!!

You bastard:(

I think I got about 2 more to wait.
See see?!? Calgary is better than vancouver. :D This will be my third weekend in a row heading to the hills...

Wonder if you can ride it with the arm behind your ass. My friend showed me how to do it on the T-Bar but I suck at it. Maybe I'll go mid week when no one is there and test it out.

#45 ·
The arm sort of curves right before the platter, and I hold it down a little lower so it doesn't do the ball squisher. The only issue for me is it pushes right on the muscle and sort of hurts, I just shift positions a bit and try to use more arm strength to hold the pressure off my leg.

I haven't taken it more than 3 times in a day, not sure what it's like doing a whole day on the platter!

And my current hatred of Lake Louise continues with the question....why the f#%k would a person drive 1.5hrs to ride a platter lift all day??... Because the rest of the hill is just rocks and ice and cat tracks.... Super lame. Seriously... A platter lift..... They have a new gondola and a 6 person chair.. But they still can't upgrade the summit platter...I'll spend my cash on some places that have snow.

#48 ·
That's why I usually spend most of my time on the top of the world, you can access decent off-piste stuff from it, as well as some groomers for my perpetual need to bomb. :D The platter just gets me up to the "ultimate steeps". Although in may when the rest of the hill was slush or ice, it was still powder up there.

Ssv was great for the morning. Unfortunately they opened up runs one after another and not the same time so the runs got demolished.

If you don't go to standish and wawa for trees there won't be any pow left. Unless it snows again.

Nakiska was actually pretty good today! The gold chair was closed until 1:30 due to racer training, but there were very few people on the hill so we did some laps on the Olympic chair. They've got a little rail park at mid-mountain now and I kept doing some jumps in there on the way through.

Once the gold chair opened up I headed up for a few runs, low vis due to the snow making at the top, but the runs were in good shape. Headed into the glades and there was about 8" of fresh almost untouched (while last weekend it was starting to get tracked out).

My buddies are coming down from Edmonton this weekend before they head back to Toronto for the winter. Thinking about Nakiska again tomorrow and the LL Sunday if they open up more terrain, otherwise possibly SSV on sunday instead.

Keep us in the loop!
