I went up there last season with a beacon, and then they checked my bag to see if i had a shovel. I thought i did but i didnt. Came back the next day with all the gear and there was no one there to check.

I'll be at Sunshine on Sunday for sure if anyone else is going. It's looking to be a good weekend for sure, last weekend was awesome there, pow days in April...i didn't see that coming from the way the season was going.

I sort of think it seems like a marketing ploy, as Fernie and Louise have some pretty crazy in bounds terrain that you don't need gear for. Maybe it's just to keep tourists out?
I thought it was some dumb rule because they didn't originally have Goats eye and the divide as part of their lease. So when they opened up the divide they were required as part of the lease. They apparently are also responsible for WaWa Ridge and Twin Cairns area, as they attempt to get them in their control too.

I will probably stay in Banff again. Up for doing at least one hike to the top?

Yep. There is a gate that can only be opened by the signal from a beacon. Its a great idea as the conditions can be tricky in there especially when the viz is bad so it keeps out the punters. You can hire abeacon in Banff. Well worth the $25 if there is pow!

I'm heading up this weekend, Looks like sunday is going to be the best day but I have a night out planned in Calgary on saturday and I might be hanging like a mofo. I'll definitely be in sunshine on either saturday or sunday though. Might rent some avy gear if there's anyone to go into the dive with?

I've blown off saturday night plans so will be riding the afternoon on saturday and all day sunday at Sunshine. What Avi gear do I need for the dive as I'm going to hire it tomorrow morning. This is kit list at the Calgary outdoor centre:

Avalanche transceiver (digital) $10.00
Avalanche probe $3.00
Snow shovel $3.00
Snow saw $2.50

Will it be wise to get all of the above?
