ONE more question, we really want to do a day of cat riding at one of the aforementioned locations. Castle claims best cat skiing in AB, I have experience with Fernie snow so figure that might be a good bet as well (but is about $100 more per person). Whitefish I know nothing about. Anyone have any experience with cat skiing tours in those areas?

THANK YOU

See who has availability. KPOW is another one (about 1:30 from Calgary) but I believe it's already booked up for this year. Maybe get on a standby list?

They all have availability at least one of the days we will be there. I think i'll go with castle because it is the least expensive and the whitefish one didn't look that amazing from the video they made.

Just got back to the hotel from a day at Fernie. Conditions aren't great right now. They've had a bit of snow recently, but it's sitting on an icy base. Unreal winds once you got above the lower mountain that created white-out conditions and completely stripped all the loose snow off every unsheltered slope. The hill was okay for a couple of hours after opening, but by about noon the crowds, wind, and ice made it very sketchy.

SSV yesterday. They got a ton of snow over the weekend, and conditions were tracked-pow to pow depending how tight you like the trees

we stayed exclusively on Goats Eye, as we managed to find fresh/soft all day. Ancient snowboarder proverb "never leave good conditions in search of better"

There is still a fair amount of exposed/semi exposed rock on anything steep and the first bit of any run on goats eye it was really hard and icy. Trees are really good, runs were soft but getting fairly choppy near the end of the day. overall good day....first 3-4 runs were the best of the year so far.

I should update here too:

Was at Fernie on Friday Jan 10th. Conditions were FANTASTIC. Good coverage all over. The only things not open were Polar Peak and the Saddles.

The old side (Lizard and Cedar bowls) had better snow than the Timber bowl. I didn't get into Currie at all. Good snow up on the Knot Chutes, just about tumbled off a cliff I was speeding down the chutes so much faster than normal!

Early morning under the bear chair did a couple laps right under the chair and the snow was good enough for face shots!

Saturday it rained all day, a friend said that the freeze line was around the bottom of white pass quad. They may have had good snow up top.

Didn't ride Sunday but another forum member did and said the hill was good, not great but good.

Shredded Kicking Horse Fri, Sat, Sun. Friday was cool found some powder spots but nothing too crazy. Friday night it dumped and Saturday was amazing, knee deep and more where wind hit. Experienced 130km wind while on stairway chair right before they closed it, that was...wild. Sunday was bluebird and some more fresh.

Fuez was closed Sat but opened up Sunday mid-morning and was really nice. Didn't even look to see if Superbowl was open, it did not look like a fun hike. REALLY good weekend to be up there.
