Thought I'd make a thread for sharing the local conditions similar to the Vancouver thread here.
Dec. 14th - Castle Opening Day. This is my first time here and the hill has a very laid back vibe to it. Conditions were decent for early season. Huckleberry and sundance had mixtures on powder, chuky powder, crust thru out the run. Lots of little branches sticking out.
Red chair didn't open until afternoon and it was very rocky in places. had to stick around trees for best conditions.
The bad: chairs are sloooooow, and they sway a lot.
The Ugly: T-bar pub run out of draft and pizza before noon. My food never came
Dec.15th - Fernie
Great conditions - untouched powder can be found in currie/cedar/siberia. Epic conditions up on top of mountain. untouched pow and sparse trees.
Good mixture of soft snow and groomers across the board. Many tree areas in lower elevations are closed off to conserve base. Tons of branches are sticking out. The last sections of groomers before base is riddled with tiny rocks. Slightly annoying.
I think it definitely has the best conditions compared to (LL, SSV, KH, Castle) can't comment on Revy but I'll be there next weekend.
No worries, I'm back there this Friday. So if you're heading up later than that, just check back at this thread.
Without giving too much away online, most people get off the chairs and head down a run. If you're willing to traverse across a little further than others, or walk for a couple minutes off the platter, paradise, ptarmigan chairs...
The best goods are in gladed areas a little off the beaten path. Nothing crazy for steepness, although the ultimate steeps usually isn't heavily used. They were also closed all weekend so I'm expecting them to be good still on Friday.
i was out there last week, did a week at kicking horse, 25th and 26th were alright, top of mountain/hikes (stairway to heaven and T2) were pretty good, qausi boot deep snow in the feuz and crystal bowls, beyond that the mountain was tracked out and we had to hike to get anything good. Friday the 1st was the best, got about 20cms at the base, probably double that up top, boot to knee deep all day, was great! back in toronto now, absolutely sucks ass!
I thought the conditions were pretty good. Pretty warm so snow softening up. Poutenen and his girlfriend are fantastic. I can really improve by making it out with them a few more times.
LL is decent, a lot of snow but very tracked out. We found a few patches of soft stuff on the backside hiking off paradise. Was nice to meet you arsenal too bad you had to take off, next time we will ride!
Yeah, it blew I had to leave so soon. Can't really call it a meeting per se, but I look forward to having a real day on the hill with you before year end. I had to bail as I only had an hour and then had to meet my bud who blew out his knee. When I got to the bottom he found me and was more than ready to leave. Did you and Poutenen hit some kickers?
Sorry off the platter we hiked back, not off paradise. Front got crusty in the afternoon but usually does since its south. Ill be there tomorrow, grey jacket black pants haha. Kinda blend.
Ya we hit up paradise and then the platter and then we came around front side for a couple park laps. Hit the L line but no XL today, maybe tomorrow if I'm feeling good. That whale tail looks scary ill be avoiding that hahah. Poutenen did pretty good off the m line, if we had more time I woulda got him on the L line for sure ?. Next time! Dude can rip the choppy stuff though we had a good time.
Thanks gents! Yeah was great riding with you all today... Seriouscat, most of the mountain is tracked out, but the groomers were in good shape, and my usualy spots for some of the fluffier stuff were good as usual! :yahoo:
Sorta wish I had thrown the helmet cam on but it was fun riding without thinking about filming anything. I think the best run of the day was off in some of the larch area glades. I tried to lose Arsenalfan in there but I couldn't shake the guy!
Tried a stupid FS 180 off a small jump and muffed it pretty bad, landed on my ribs and I'm a hurtin unit now! Gotta spend more time in the park once I've got this big mountain thing out of the way. Now I'm wondering if I'm going to have to jack myself on Advil or Percocets on competition day.

I appreciate the accolades but I absolutely sucked ass today! And you know it....lol. No more shotgunning brewskies before shredding with you. I really don't know what I expected, but I certainly didn't think you would be at that skill level. I thought I could get away with my B game and that you would be an average rider. Not a chance. I couldn't believe when you jumped into those tight trees and just kept gaining speed. I thought to myself....keep up....wholly shit....or your going to be spending the night on the mountain cuz you don't know where the hell you are! I appreciate you looking over your shoulder and waiting up. My riding will only benefit from taking in a few more days with you out there. I have so many holidays it is sickening, so when you get the itch, let me know and we can head out. I don't mind riding Louise. And I promise you will see a different ARSENALFAN on the mountain in the next week or two. Torpedo wants to ride with you guys too. And that girlfriend of yours is fearless. Watch out. Because it won't be long before she is lapping you! Cheers!!
Bah!!! Don't beat yourself up, just making it down some of those runs is tough enough, and I've been in those glades before so I know there are no surprises when you round the next corner. Well board again soon and have some brewskis AFTER last chair!!! :yahoo:
I think we'll have to take my GF into the larch glades next time (not sure if they have an actual name but that's what I'm calling them from now on). I think she'd have a blast in there! If we had more time I'd like to do a few laps through them... And she says she can't wait!
What a great day of boarding! Thanks Arsenalfan for riding with us today, it was a lot of fun and we will definately have to do it again. It was nice to meet you too casual. Poutanen and I always think it is fun to meet forum members. Hope to see you guys on the hills again soon. For those of you heading out tomorrow have fun!!
Well LL was a gong show. busier than last weekend! Crusty hardback with some blown powder in spots. DB run off top of the world backside is still soft, chute off platter is still soft and enjoyable.
Had a tough day and only realized that my bindings were loose with little more than hour to go.... Got control back after that... So retarded.
Louise was nuts on saturday, so tracked out and so busy! Found some nice stuff up on larch and in some areas off paradise on the front that poutanen showed me... at the end of the day I realized they had an airbag in the park an I missed out
lol ya i think last weekend was the first day that the airbag was out this year. Snow wasn't terrible at LL today but i was on the frontside for most of the day.
Spent the weekend at castle - what a sick mountain. Yeah the lifts are a joke - but that doesn't matter. I took your advice and stuck north though the morning. At first there was a thin crust but the sun quickly melted that. Spent the afternoon in the chutes and coming down giggle ridge which was sick and still nice and soft.
As the weekend went on the snow was turning to corn on the main mountain so we spent a lot of time hitting the tree's on Haig - which were largely untracked in parts.
Going to keep an eye on the dump reports because I'm in love.
ya they keep switching the forcast on that. One day it says it will dump the next says no snow. they never really know until the day before and even then it seems dicey.
Yeah, at the moment the weather network is saying 5-10 tomorrow at LL, and another 5 on Wednesday.
In other news, anybody been to Kimberley lately? We're heading there next Sunday, probably do a day in Fernie and two in Kimberley or vice versa. Although they're talking about 8-10 degree daytime highs next weekend there!:blink::blink:
my friends were at fernie at the weekend, said it was quite nice but the warm temps and rain turned most of the snow to pancake batter by yesterday afternoon
wazzup niqqa's. Sunshine this upcoming monday. Be there at 8:00. See ya
