I was lucky enough to try the new Never Summer Women's Proto Type Two at Sierra at Tahoe’s demo day and again at another demo day. I tried a 139 (spring park day) and 142 (powder day). I am 5'2 with a small frame. If I had to choose one size I would go for the 139.
The all new Women’s Never Summer Type Two Proto is an all mountain asym twin. In my opinion there is nothing this board can’t handle. From warm spring park days to deep powder lines.
I was worried that this board would be too stiff since I was riding a flexy freestyle specific snowboard but this board is still fun and playful. It simply feels more stable. It is easy to spin and butter around on. I was able to spin 540s with ease.
The biggest change I noticed riding this board is how much easier it is to make a heel turn. This board has a deeper sidecut on the heel edge. It makes a huge difference. While riding my local mountain there were heel edge side hits that I could not get to before but on the Type Two Proto I have the speed and edge hold to get to those side hits. This is a game changer because it just gives me more opportunities. Simply put, you don't need to edge as hard and you feel more stable when making heel turns. Since I use less effort to make heel turns, I find it easier to ride switch as well.
I feel that this board did very well on rails and boxes. It was easy to 50/50 and keep straight. It also felt very stable and locked in on boardslides.
The TruGrit Topsheet looks amazing. It reminds me of sandpaper or grip tape. In the sun it looks like it sparkles or shimmers. I got a lot of compliments on how the board looks. You would think it would be more grippy than other topsheets but I felt it had about the same grip. Not that this matters since I am a huge fan of Crab Grabs, which I recommend with any board--they just make it easier to grab.
I love the pop of this board, not only off kickers and side hits but also getting up onto features. I could definitely ollie higher on this board. This amazing pop took me a little time to get used to but once I did, it was obviously a plus. I was able to boost higher without even trying. The board does the work for you.
This board floats on the powder like a dream even with my centered park stance. My back leg was not killing me even through I ride in Tahoe where the powder can be heavy at times.
It cuts right through the chop and chunder. It feels so stable and does NOT buck you around on the bumps. It is amazing to ride such a poppy board that still has great dampening. This is a hard combination to find in a board.
Bottom line, I want this board when it comes out next season. Out of all the boards that I demoed from Never Summer and other companies, it was by far my favorite.
