It is that time of the year. Next year's catalogs are coming out.

Zuzupopo starting to upload some already, there are a few extra catalogs of Burton and Capita at EZloungin (which I probably shouldn't just copy-paste links here without permission)

From another thread: how is the Asymulator gone? This could have been so much more than an oddity…

Super Stoked for the Mega Merc and Powder racer split though! It almost makes me question my plans to buy a Slash Vertical and/or a Sashimi split.
Nidecker is getting into the split game, at last! Very, very intrigued by that Escape Split 👀 I'm still waiting for some real review of that Thruster, looks like a great board and an unexpected challenger to the Danchehaul (different shape, but quite the same freeride/carve that can do big tricks kind of program).

Slash being itself and doesn't need to do anything else! I am even questionning having both the Vertical and the Straight (and god knows my Straight is well over 100 days!)
The new Slash ATV looks interesting, if they dial back the stiffness, could be a great board.
That's pretty much the same as previous years, no?
I hope they leave the flex the same though, it's nice to have that kind of aggressive freeride boards.

Edit: missed the 3d shape on the tips! Maybe it will be a bit more forgiving at slower speed then...
although I don't know if Slash knows the meaning of playful hahaha.
I think the happy place is a pretty playful board. But the for the guns they are, the ATV and Straight are super nimble and easy. I absolutely love my Straight when cruising mellow sidehits, very predictable and easy to manoeuvre, if a bit catchy (and still, not that much).
The more I think about Nidecker finally doing some splits, the more I disappointed there is no Mellow split...

Forgot that Swoard has been demoing a wider, softboot only, board. Supposedly work great with negative angles and flies in powder… sounds like a more aggressive Korua to me. To be produced next year apparently.

Is there a big market for all mountain freestyle splits? I have been debating picking one up, but would lean more towards big mountain/powder.
It's not like you're going to spin bs rodeos, but you might like a more playful feeling on the way down, for little jumps and even the way you turn. I mean on the level of performance of a mega merc, your very unlikely to hit any "skill cap". So for 99,99% of people it's more about the feeling and the way you ride it rather than "freeride performance". That's why I love my sickstick!

Also riding switch is crucial in some exposed traverses too, as you have to be on your toe edge. And on some day I can ride quite some groomers with the split (to warm up, after, in between small tours etc.ł

So yup, I could definitely ride a mega merc split!

Yeah the specs are... Intriguing. Definitely like to try before hand!

Damnit, I wanted a Slash Vertical split so bad already, but now this review has dropped I way too close to pulling the trigger. Except I have zero reason to replace my split… 🤔
Nidecker 23/24

Was thinking about Thruster this year, but I guess I'll wait for the 23/24 model. Digging that aggressive black matte look.
Pretty much last year with new graphics...I mean, it works But they new Gamma Asym twin is interesting! Stiffer all mountain twin? There are quite some success in this category!

I have my doubts about Capita internal scale. They rated the Kazu and the Asymulator the same, and they aren't at all. Either they don't want to scare potential buyers, or they refer the some mechanical properties of the core, that doesn't tell the full story.

Lots of ultra/carbonized boards aren't actually stiffer, but gives back way more, are more lively, more reactive and more aggressive. They can really night and and day, but pour them under a press you wouldn't necessarily see a difference.

How is the Kazu, would I enjoy it in the park and freeriding or is it more specifically tuned for something else? I saw this years rating came down in stiffness I believe and it enticed me since I'm usually on a Jones MT which is rated around 6-7 stiffness.
I would say it's exactly that: freeride and park. It has power, but it's not overwhelming or feels like a workout. I wouldn't compare stiffness between brand.
Then you’ve got Jones recycling materials, doing reclaimed cores and charging more. I try to be environmentally conscious and understand that this might cost more, but I doubt the product is actually better. That’s just not something that I’m going to pay for. Just make a board that’s going to last!
Sustainably made in Dubaï is still something I can't wrap my head around 🤔

Maybe a stupid question, but is a boards stiffness rating measured pre or post broken in? Straight out of the packaging I imagine but surely different cores and technology will break in at different rates no?
I don't think it's measured at all, it's more a feeling–and commercial–thing. To me the brands flex rating are often "how locked-in/how much of a workout it feels". Best case scenario would be "how easy it is to flex it on snow", which depends on many factor beside the actual apparent stiffness of the board—like the sidecut, camber profile and nose/tail length.

Yeah the Longo Merc was basically a Mercury with more camber. So I would expect the new one to be the same...

But that Resort Twin... Please just bring back the Asymulator with more sizes!

Well it's the same idea than the Asymulator and formerly Spring break twin: a twin for the whole resort. Why not make it asym while they are at it? It was awesome. Sure it looks softer and wider and has rocker instead of flat… but still, I think I'll miss the carving abilities.

I like the new Longo Pro model. If it butters without much effort I'll buy it, but I wouldnt be surprised if its a stiffer board than advertised.
His old pro model/limited edition was a Merc with more camber, but not a stiffer one. I look like this new one is pretty much the same idea, so I would expect more camber than more stiffness.
Longo's tag line is a bit naive if anything, but not that bad. Not my favorite ever, but I kinda like the Basquiat painting… Lots of room for stickers too! Threy tried something a bit similar on this year ATV, which l kinda like too.

Although previous years black & white paint drop ATV where looking so rad, I should have picked one! Apparently they are doing more of these paint splash next year and I love it: https://www.boardsportsource.com/2023/01/18/slash-by-gigi-2023-24-snowboards-preview/
